We have reviewed our experience with eight patients with paraesophageal hernias surgically repaired at this institution during an 18-month period. Three of these patients required emergent operation, and although the morbidity was higher in this group than in those undergoing elective surgery, no mortalities occurred in either group.

Congenital Paraesophageal Hernia in a Cat

Initial diagnostics and imaging suggested a pleuroperitoneal or hiatal hernia.

Congenital Paraesophageal Hiatal Hernia
Journal of the American College of Surgeons, 2003A healthy newborn baby with a left cleft lip and palate presented to our institution at 18 hours of life because of persistent emesis after feeds. Initial evaluation with chest radiography and a contrast swallow at the outside facility demonstrated an intrathoracic stomach (A, arrows outline the stomach with retained contrast).

Paraesophageal hiatal hernias in children
Diseases of the Esophagus, 2003Hiatal hernia is a rare condition, which may be a cause of important clinical problems either as a mediastinal mass or as a cause of failure of the antireflux mechanism. Nineteen patients treated for paraesophageal hiatal hernias were included in the study.
