Parametric Identification of Nonlinear Ship Roll Motion from Forced Roll Data

Journal of Ship Research, 1988
A method of estimating the parameters in a nonlinear, single-degree-of-freedom model of ship roll motion is described. It is shown that the "linear-in-the-parameters" nature of the model allows formulation of a relatively simple, and computationally very efficient, estimation procedure, based on a recursive, linear least-squares algorithm.

A nonlinear model of parametric rolling stabilization by anti-roll tanks

Ocean Engineering, 2009
The present paper describes a mathematical model in which the fluid motion inside a U-tank is nonlinearly coupled to the heave, roll and pitch motions of the ship. The main purpose of the investigation is centred on the control of roll motion in the case of parametric resonance in longitudinal waves.

Predicting Extreme Parametric Roll in Container Ships

2020
Parametric roll resonance is an unstable phenomenon that can lead a ship into dangerous situations such as possibly capsizing or loss of cargo. Container ships are particularly susceptible to parametric roll due to the time variance of the metacentric height.

Evaluating Roll Damping in Parametric Rolling: Challenges and Approaches

The prediction of parametric rolling in ships remains a critical area of research due to the significant impact on maritime safety and vessel performance. Among the various parameters influencing parametric rolling, roll damping is notoriously challenging to assess due to its nonlinear nature.

Model simulation of parametrically excited ship rolling

Nonlinear Dynamics, 1990
Two different models for simulating the ship motion in longitudinal or oblique seas are presented and studied in detail. Particular attention is devoted to the parametrically induced rolling which may be established by means of the nonlinear coupling between both heave-roll and/or pitch-roll motions.

Experience from Parametric Rolling of Ships

2011
This chapter reviews three recent full-scale events with parametric rolling for Ro–Ro Large Car and Truck Carriers (LCTC). The events represent three principally different modes of parametric rolling: principal parametric resonance where the period of encounter is half of the roll natural period in following seas (I) and in head seas (II), and ...

Sensitivity in numerical analysis of parametric roll

Ocean Engineering, 2013
This study considers a numerical simulation of parametric roll, which causes serious safety issues for ships. The numerical simulation is carried out in regular waves and irregular waves for two container ships. In regular waves, parametric roll motion is simulated using two different time-domain methods: the impulse-response-function method and the 3D

Nonlinear and stochastic aspects of parametric rolling modeling

2004
This paper addresses, starting from an extensive series of tests in longitudinal regular waves (already done) and irregular waves (in progress), the problems connected with the threshold formulation for parametric rolling and its amplitude modeling above threshold.

26th ITTC Parametric Roll Benchmark Study

2019
The 26th ITTC Specialist Committee on Stability in Waves was assigned the task of conducting a benchmark of numerical simulation methods for the prediction of the parametric rolling of ships in head seas. The vessel chosen for the benchmark and the organizations which participated in the benchmark and their simulation tools are described.
