Current aspects of antibiotic prophylaxis for upper gastrointestinal bleeding in cirrhosis patients

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Infectious Diseases, 2002
Bacterial infection is a common complication in cirrhotic patients. The portal hypertension as well as the immune depression observed in these patients can explain this high incidence of bacterial infection.

FinTech and Environmental Sustainability: Evidence From Brazil

open access: yesSustainable Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study explores the dynamic interplay between economic growth and environmental sustainability from a FinTech perspective, using Brazil as a case study. While FinTech's contribution to green transformation, sustainable finance, and resource efficiency has gained increasing attention, a notable lack of empirical research remains to assess ...

Official statistics and big data in Latin America: Data enclosures and counter-movements

open access: yesBig Data & Society
With the rise of the data-driven economy, the state-owned sector of official statistics has been pressurised to ‘modernise’ and engage with big data. However, most of these data sources are controlled by tech corporations.

Influence of Heat Treatment Temperature on Crevice and Pitting Corrosion of UNS S32205 Duplex Stainless Steel

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
Heat treatments that alter the proportions of austenite and ferrite phases or induce the precipitation of phases such as sigma in duplex stainless steel UNS S32205 make it more susceptible to pitting and crevice corrosion. However, the effects of these treatments are not always evident when analyzed using the cyclic polarization technique.

Effect of Postweld Heat Treatment on Laser‐Welded Duplex Stainless Steel: Crystallographic Patterns and Fatigue Behavior

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
Laser welding of duplex stainless steel disrupts phase balance, promotes nitride precipitation, and reduces fatigue resistance. Postweld heat treatment restores austenite and dissolves nitrides, but the resulting crystallography and phase morphology still impair fatigue performance.

General formulation for uniform and non‐uniform high‐strength steel slender I‐section beams

open access: yesSteel Construction, EarlyView.
Abstract The Ayrton–Perry approach is the basis of Eurocode 3 rules for buckling resistance, with distinct curves and imperfection factors depending on section type, steel grade, and other parameters. For generic members – built‐up or not, uniform or not, with complex supports or not – the code allows either the general method (clause 8.3.4 of Eurocode

New Ommatius Wiedemann from the Americas with two new species groups, keys, and taxonomic notes (Diptera: Asilidae) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Two species groups are proposed for Ommatius Wiedemann, normus and tibialis species groups, increasing the number to eight groups from the Americas. The normus group includes six species, two of which are new, O. nebulosus n. sp. and O. tepui n.

Effects of Glyphosate on the Planktonic Microbiota: An Experimental Approach

open access: yesEnvironmental Toxicology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Glyphosate is one of the most widely used herbicides in the world, including in Brazil, and its dispersion through habitats and surface waters can impact entire aquatic ecosystems. However, experimental studies evaluating the effects of pesticides on whole planktonic communities, considering attributes such as richness, density and composition—
