Surface Tension Measurement of Ti‐6Al‐4V by Falling Droplet Method in Oxygen‐Free Atmosphere

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
In this article, the temperature‐dependent surface tension of free falling, oscillating Ti‐6Al‐4V droplets is investigated in both argon and monosilane doped, oxygen‐free atmosphere. Droplet temperature and oscillation are captured with one single high‐speed camera, and the surface tension is calculated with Rayleigh's formula.

Impact of Titanium Mining and Other Anthropogenic Activities on Malaria Positivity Rates and Parasitemia in Five Selected Study Sites in Msambweni Subcounty, Kwale County, Kenya

open access: yesJournal of Parasitology Research
Africa was home to 95% of malaria cases and deaths in 2021. The negative impacts of malaria can be aggravated by social–economic–environmental factors, more so agroeconomic practices such as irrigation, mining, and dam construction. The aim of this study

Allergy and Parasites [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Parasitology Research, 2013
It is estimated that at least one-fifth of the world’s population suffers from allergic diseases (atopic asthma and allergic rhinitis are the most common). Different factors contribute to the development of allergies; a predisposing genetic background is needed; however, environmental factors play an important role, among them is the exposure to ...

Recycling of NiTi Shape Memory Alloys: Fundamental and Technological Aspects of a Vacuum Induction Melting Processing Route

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The present study investigates recycling of NiTi shape memory alloys via vacuum induction melting. An ingot was synthesized from elemental Ni and Ti and subjected to three subsequent remelting cycles. Remelting increases process durations and impurity levels and adversely affects microstructures and functional properties.

Molecular and Functional Characterization of Trehalase in the Mosquito Anopheles stephensi

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2020
Like other insects, in blood-feeding mosquitoes, trehalase (TRE; EC 3.2.1.28), an enzyme that metabolizes trehalose, may influence a wide array of functions including flight, survival, reproduction, and vectorial capacity, but its role has not been ...

Workflow for Design of Experiments‐Based Modeling of Species Transport and Growth Kinetics in GaN Hydride Vapor Phase Epitaxy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A novel workflow for investigating hydride vapor phase epitaxy for GaN bulk crystal growth is proposed. It combines Design of experiments (DoE) with physical simulations of mass transport and crystal growth kinetics, serving as an intermediate step between DoE and experiments.

Deep sequencing revealed molecular signature of horizontal gene transfer of plant like transcripts in the mosquito Anopheles culicifacies: an evolutionary puzzle [version 1; referees: 2 approved]

open access: yesF1000Research, 2015
In prokaryotes, horizontal gene transfer (HGT) has been regarded as an important evolutionary drive to acquire and retain beneficial genes for their survival in diverse ecologies.

No evidence for schistosome parasite fitness trade-offs in the intermediate and definitive host

open access: yesParasites & Vectors, 2023
Background The trematode parasite Schistosoma mansoni uses an aquatic snail intermediate and a vertebrate definitive host to complete its life cycle. We previously showed that a key transmission trait—the number of cercariae larvae shed from infected ...

Proteomic profiling of Plasmodium sporozoite maturation identifies new proteins essential for parasite development and infectivity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Plasmodium falciparum sporozoites that develop and mature inside an Anopheles mosquito initiate a malaria infection in humans.
