The Effect of the Composition and Microstructure of Gray Cast Iron on Preferential Wear During Parasitic Drag and on Intrinsic Damping Capacity

SAE Technical Paper Series, 2003
<div class="htmlview paragraph">Propensity of cold judder was studied by investigating the correlation between the microstructure of gray iron brake disks and friction properties of commercial brake linings. Based on a brake disk for a mid-size passenger car, gray iron disks with 6 different microstructures were manufactured by changing the ...

Drag-folds and parasitic folds

1982
Drag-folds, literally plis d’entrainement, but termed by Moret (1947) plis de frottement (friction folds), are asymmetrical folds produced in the weaker beds by differential movements of the more resistant rocks above and below them. They are disharmonie folds, usually confined to definite zones or groups of rocks.

Look what the cat dragged in: do parasites contribute to human cultural diversity?

Behavioural Processes, 2005
If human culture emerges from the modal personality of a population, can global variation in parasitism that affects personality lead to cultural diversity among nations? The answer could help explain why people seem to vary so much from one land to another. Thomas et al. (2005) review how parasites manipulate behaviour, inc v t d g m r s r b r t p i r

Gliding Flight: Drag and Torque of a Hawk and a Falcon With Straight and Turned Heads, and a Lower Value For The Parasite Drag Coefficient

Journal of Experimental Biology, 2000
ABSTRACT Raptors – falcons, hawks and eagles in this study – such as peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus) that attack distant prey from high-speed dives face a paradox. Anatomical and behavioral measurements show that raptors of many species must turn their heads approximately 40 ° to one side to see the prey straight ahead with maximum ...
