Chemical Control of the Field Dodder (Cuscuta campestris) in New-Seeded Alfalfa (Medicago sativa)

open access: yesAgronomy
Field dodder (Cuscuta campestris yuncker) is an important parasitic weed that has negative impacts on the growth and yield of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.). Effective control of field dodder in alfalfa crops is necessary to reduce yield losses.

Farmers and Agricultural Extension Officers Perception of Striga gesnerioides (Willd.) Vatke Parasitism on Cowpea in the Upper East Region of Ghana

open access: yesAdvances in Agriculture, 2018
Cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp] is an important food security crop in Sub-Saharan Africa. However, cowpea production in some parts of this region is constrained by Striga gesnerioides (Willd.) Vatke infestation resulting in yield losses.

Preliminary Evaluation of a Dodder Anthracnose Fungus from China as a Mycoherbicide for Dodder Control in the US [PDF]

open access: yes, 1989
Dodder (Cuscuta spp.) is a noxious, parasitic, annual weed throughout most of the United States. A fungus used to control it in China was imported under permit for studies with U.S. dodder species in containment.

The Role of Soil Microbiota in the Control of Parasitic Weeds

open access: yesPlant and Cell Physiology
Abstract Parasitic weeds from the Orobanchaceae family, particularly Striga, Orobanche, and Phelipanche spp., are responsible for substantial agricultural losses worldwide. A better understanding of the intricate chemical interaction between parasitic plants and their host crops, and the effect the rhizosphere microbiome may have on ...

Comparing Methods for Measuring Predation: Toward a Quantitative–Informative Indicator of Natural Pest Control

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
Predation methods vary widely in their ability to quantify biological control. Estimating predation rates (the number of prey killed per predator per time unit) is crucial. Combining predation rates with predator abundance yields real‐time field estimates of pests consumed.

Pectin Remodeling and Involvement of AtPME3 in the Parasitic Plant–Plant Interaction, Phelipanche ramosaArabidospis thaliana

open access: yesPlants
Phelipanche ramosa is a root parasitic plant fully dependent on host plants for nutrition and development. Upon germination, the parasitic seedling develops inside the infected roots a specific organ, the haustorium, thanks to the cell wall-degrading ...

The Parasitoid Wasp Glyptapanteles porthetriae Induces a Photoperiod‐Dependent Diapause‐Like State in Its Potential Overwintering Host Lasiocampa quercus

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
We evaluated Lasiocampa quercus as an overwintering host for the koinobiont larval endoparasitoid Glyptapanteles porthetriae by exposing parasitized larvae to different environmental conditions and comparing parasitoid development with that in the primary host Lymantria dispar.

Insects and Survival: A Review of Primary and Secondary Defense Strategies

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
Based on a review of three decades of literature, insect defense mechanisms are classified into primary (I) and secondary (II) mechanisms of behavioral, morphological, and chemical nature. These mechanisms have been recorded in 22 (I) and 20 (II) orders, respectively.
