Euryhaline preferences of the decapod crab Mioplax socialis enabled it to survive during the Badenian/Sarmatian extinction (Miocene) in the Central Paratethys

open access: yesGeologica Carpathica, 2016
Although decapod crustaceans of the Central Paratethys were diverse during the Badenian (Langhian-Early Serravallian), a dramatic drop in their diversity occurred at the boundary with the Sarmatian.

Timing, cause and impact of the late Eocene stepwise sea retreat from the Tarim Basin (west China) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
International audienceA vast shallow epicontinental sea extended across Eurasia and was well-connected to the Western Tethys before it retreated westward and became isolated as the Paratethys Sea.

First occurrences of Trionychidae (Testudines, Cryptodira) from the Miocene of Poland: Detailed cranial anatomy and biogeographic implications

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
Fossil finds from three Middle Miocene sites in Poland reveal the northernmost known presence of trionychid turtles in Europe, tentatively identified as Trionyx cf. vindobonensis, suggesting a warmer climate that supported thermophilic species in Central Europe during this period. Abstract Modern trionychids (Testudines, Cryptodira) have a pan‐tropical

Litho- and biostratigraphic data of lower-middle Miocene sections in the Transylvanian basin and SE Carpathian Foredeep (Romania)

open access: yesData in Brief, 2019
Litho- and biostratigraphic data are provided of 5 stratigraphic sections in Romania covering the “Badenian” marine flooding that occurred in the Central Paratethys during the middle Miocene (Langhian).

Depositional and stratigraphic evolution of a Permian megalake system: Implications for seiche‐influenced models

open access: yesThe Depositional Record, Volume 12, Issue 2, April 2026.
During the Late Permian, the rise of the Gondwanides Belt trapped marine waters, giving birth to a vast megalake. This lake shifted between overfilled, balanced‐fill and underfilled stages that are recorded by high‐frequency accommodation changes, while meteorological seiches shaped the sedimentary dynamic and produced heterolithic beds.

Late miocene ostracodes of Serbia: Morphologic and palaeoenvironmental considerations [PDF]

open access: yesGeološki Anali Balkanskoga Poluostrva, 2006
About 11.5 million years ago, a tectonic uplift of the Eastern and Western Carpathians separated the Pannonian Basin from the rest of the Paratethys. This orogenesis event caused an unconformity between the Sarmatian brackish sediments and the Pannonian ...

The Messinian Salinity Crisis Between Italy and Albania: The Peri‐Adriatic Depression and Southern Adriatic Basin Records

open access: yesBasin Research, Volume 38, Issue 2, March/April 2026.
Basin‐scale correlation of Messinian salinity crisis (MSC) deposits across the Apennine–Albanide foreland basin system integrating outcrop and subsurface data. ABSTRACT We reconstructed the geological evolution of the Albanides during the Messinian salinity crisis (MSC), based on the integration of outcrop and subsurface data from both onshore (peri ...
