Nonperturbative Condensates in the Electroweak Phase-Transition [PDF]

open access: yes, 1995
We discuss the electroweak phase-transition in the early universe, using non-perturbative flow equations for a computation of the free energy. For a scalar mass above $\sim 70$ GeV, high-temperature perturbation theory cannot describe this transition ...

Paris COP 21: Power that Speaks the Truth? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
© 2016 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group In this paper, I set out some of the key aspects of the Paris COP 21 Climate Change Agreement. The Paris Agreement was initially reported as a major success. However, this was in so far as many

Intrabandgap States Engineering in Functionalized Nanodiamond to Generate Solvated Electrons for Photocatalysis Under Solar Illumination

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The negative electron affinity of diamond allows to emit highly reductive electrons. By introducing intra‐bandgap states and an optimized electron transfer mechanism by surface functionalization with Ru(bpy)3, the formation of solvated electrons is achieved upon solar irradiation.

Implications of geoengineering under the 1.5 °C target: Analysis and policy suggestions

open access: yesAdvances in Climate Change Research, 2017
The Paris Agreement introduced a 1.5 °C target to control the rise in global temperature, but clear arrangements for feasible implementation pathways were not made.

Infrared Nanocrystals for Space Application: Hardness to Irradiations

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This article investigates infrared HgTe nanocrystals under X‐ray and ion irradiation, revealing remarkable radiation hardness. It uncovers distinct degradation mechanisms and shows that the nanomaterial outperforms integrated electronics. The results position colloidal nanocrystals as promising candidates for resilient space and harsh‐environment ...

Liquid Phase Transmission Electron Microscopy: A Window into the Early Stages of Complex Material Formation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Liquid‐phase transmission electron microscopy enables direct observation of nucleation and growth processes in solution. This review is dedicated to the remembrance of Helmut Cölfen and highlights recent studies on complex materials—oxides, biominerals, organic–inorganic crystals—which were central to his research activity. It summarizes key milestones,

How Europe can and should become the guardian of the Paris Agreement on climate change [PDF]

open access: yes
Environmental issues have become one of the most salient topics on the political agenda. This is due to near-unanimous consensus amongst the scientific community that all types of environmental degradation, particularly the release of greenhouse gases ...

Climate Change and Television: What the Paris Agreement means for broadcasters [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
In December 2015, the Paris Agreement was signed and governments committed themselves to major reductions in their carbon emissions. These commitments imply far reaching changes to everyday life.

Drug‐Free Thrombolysis Mediated by Physically Activated Micro/Nanoparticles

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Overview of particle‐mediated thrombolytic effects (thermal, mechanical, and chemical) and their activating physical stimuli (light, ultrasound, and magnetic field) in drug‐free thrombolysis. ABSTRACT Thrombus‐associated disorders rank among the world's leading causes of death, with ischemic heart disease and stroke as the main contributors.

A ‘fair and ambitious’ climate agreement is not nearly enough: Paris 2015 take heed!

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters, 2015
Peters et al (2015 Environ. Res. Lett. http://dx.doi.org/10.1088/1748-9326/10/10/105004 10 http://dx.doi.org/10.1088/1748-9326/10/10/105004 ) find that the INDCs submitted prior to the upcoming UNFCCC meetings in Paris are not nearly ‘fair and ambitious’
