ABSTRACT Aim Testing the impact of climate on diversification is a major goal of evolutionary biology. Birth‐death models like palaeoenvironment‐dependent diversification (PDD) models, for example, allow exploring the potential correlations between diversification dynamics and past environmental changes, such as temperature, among other abiotic ...

Analyses of occurrence data of protected insect species collected by citizens in Italy
Citizen science, the engagement of people in a research project, has grown rapidly in recent years, also for mapping of species of conservation interest.

Production of de novo complete whole genomes and scaffolding with new reference genomes of Leptocircini allow to extract thousands of orthologous genes for almost all species of the tribe. Extensive phylogenomic analyses allow to revise taxonomy and systematics of the group based on phylogenomic trees representing 90% of Leptocircini. Whole‐genome data

Dispersal of the monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) over southern Spain from its breeding grounds [PDF]
Dispersión de la mariposa monarca (Danaus plexippus) en el sur de España desde las zonas de apareamiento Durante el período comprendido entre los años 2000 y 2016, se detectaron mariposas monarca en 127 lugares fuera de las zonas costeras donde se ...

Abstract Butterflies are important bioindicators that can be used to monitor the effects of climate change, particularly in montane environments. Changes in butterfly population size over time, reflective of indicator life stages, can signal changes that have occurred or are occurring in their environment indicating ecosystem health.

Mitochondrial DNA Variation and Range Expansion in Western Bean Cutworm (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae): No Evidence for a Recent Population Bottleneck [PDF]
The western bean cutworm, Striacosta albicosta (Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is a pest of both corn and dry bean crops. At the beginning of the 21st century, the species began to extend its range out of the Great Plains, eastward through the Corn ...

Monitoring spatiotemporal patterns in the genetic diversity of a European butterfly species
We calculate multiple measures of genetic diversity and divergence for M. jurtina populations over 8 years in the UK and spatially across Europe. All UK populations sampled have high levels of gene flow and genetic diversity, with genetic diversity stable over time.

Extensive population study: Over 4 years, our study recorded 29,584 captures of three threatened butterfly species across 60 km2 in Gotland, uncovering substantial population sizes and densities, particularly for P. apollo. Species‐specific movement patterns: We observed distinct movement patterns in these species, with maximum recorded flight ...

Microsatellites reveal genetic differentiation among populations in an insect species with high genetic variability in dispersal, the codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) [PDF]
Little is known about genetic differentiation and gene flow in populations of insect species that have a high genetic variability in dispersal but lack morphologically visible morphs that disperse.
