In this chapter, the history of parotidectomy is provided, and indications, contraindications, pre-operative planning, and the different techniques of parotidectomy procedures are described. These include different types of parotidectomy (superficial or lateral parotidectomy, radical parotidectomy, and extended total parotidectomy), limited procedures (

Sternocleidomastoid muscle flap in preventing Frey's syndrome after parotidectomy: A systematic review [PDF]
Background Parotidectomy is a common procedure and Frey's syndrome (gustatory sweating) is a common side effect. The current literature was assessed concerning the effectiveness of the sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM) flap to prevent Frey's syndrome ...

Transoral parotidectomy allows for the management of parapharyngeal space tumors and accessory parotid gland tumors without the need for a transfacial/transparotid or mandible splitting procedure. It is a minimally invasive approach that permits a faster recovery and with a lesser risk of facial palsy.

When a patient presents with a mass at the angle of the mandible, a neoplasm within the parotid gland is a strong consideration. The parotid is the largest of the salivary glands. Terminal branches of the facial nerve are found within the gland. Their functional preservation is an important goal of parotid surgery.

Encouraged by the success of outpatient thyroid surgery, we have performed outpatient parotidectomy in more than 56 selected patients during the past 5 years. As a result of the success of the procedure and the enthusiastic patient response, the proportion of parotid operations performed on an inpatient basis has declined in the latter part of the ...

Parotidectomy—Anatomical considerations
Clinical Anatomy, 2011AbstractThe parotid glands are paired major salivary glands and are located in the preauricular region. Parotidectomy is a surgical procedure that entails removal of all or a portion of the parotid gland. The most common indications for this operative procedure are a neoplasm of the parotid gland or metastases to parotid lymph nodes.

Functional superficial parotidectomy
Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 1994To clinically test a new type of parotid surgery termed functional superficial parotidectomy (FSP) to preserve the function of the residual gland.Sixteen human parotid specimens were dissected, and 19 patients underwent FSP.It was shown that 91.4% of the main parotid ducts were found deep to the surface of the facial nerve.

Complications of Parotidectomy
Southern Medical Journal, 1983Parotidectomy, whether subtotal or total, is a surgical procedure associated with certain possible complications--namely, facial nerve injury, hemorrhage, infection, salivary fistula, seroma, keloid formation, greater auricular nerve anesthesia, gustatory sweating, and recurrent tumor. We review these complications to help the surgeon with preoperative

Cosmetic Approaches to Parotidectomy
Otolaryngologic Clinics of North America, 2021The parotid gland is located in a cosmetically sensitive area. Given cultural emphasis on cosmesis, using minimally invasive or hidden incisions, when appropriate, can significantly improve patient satisfaction and quality of life following surgery. Facelift-style incisions have been used since the late 1960s to approach parotid pathology.
