Automated and real‐time structure solution using 3D electron diffraction

open access: yesJournal of Applied Crystallography, EarlyView.
A fully automated, real‐time structure solution pipeline, Instamatic‐solve, has been developed by linking XDS and SHELXT to the continuous‐rotation electron diffraction method within Instamatic. Instamatic‐solve automatically handles data processing and structure solution right after data collection, providing real‐time assessments of data quality and ...

Drivers of phenological transitions in the seedling life stage

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Plant functional ecology research has primarily focused on juvenile and adult plants even though regeneration from seed can be the most consequential life‐history bottleneck with cascading influence on later stages of growth and reproduction.

An epigenomic threshold hypothesis for integrating dynamic environmental signals into functional models of developmental polyphenisms

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Interactions between developing embryos and a multitude of environmental factors (e.g. climate, nutrition, social cues, stress and anthropogenic contaminants) underlie adaptive and non‐adaptive developmental plasticity and carry broad implications across ecological ...

Biochar mitigates microplastic‐induced destabilization of soil organic carbon via molecular recalcitrance and microbial process regulation

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Soil organic carbon (SOC) stability is critical to climate mitigation but faces growing threats from microplastic (MP) pollution. Biochar (BC), a carbon‐negative soil amendment, enhances SOC persistence through chemical stabilization and microbial modulation.

Predator activity, proactive anti‐predator strategies and nesting phenology produce a dynamic landscape of risk to tundra goose reproduction

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
We show that Arctic and red fox space use significantly affects goose nest habitat selection and nest success in a low‐Arctic tundra ecosystem. However, the impact of fox predation depended on the location and timing of incubation of the nest, demonstrating the importance of incorporating time into the ‘landscape of fear’ concept.
