Partial directed coherence and neuronal connectivity inference

Proceedings of the 25th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (IEEE Cat. No.03CH37439), 2004
After a brief review of the newly introduced concept of partial directed coherence (PDC), we discuss its role and limitations in disclosing the connectivity of networks comprising spiking neurons. Because of the inherent point- process nature of the signals involved, the problem must first be formulated in continuous time and subsequently rephrased in ...

Epileptic Seizure Detection Based on Partial Directed Coherence Analysis

IEEE Journal of Biomedical and Health Informatics, 2016
Long-term video EEG epilepsy monitoring can help doctors diagnose and cure epilepsy. The workload of doctors to read the EEG signals of epilepsy patients can be effectively reduced by automatic seizure detection. The application of partial directed coherence (PDC) analysis as mechanism for feature extraction in the scalp EEG recordings for seizure ...

Using partial directed coherence to describe neuronal ensemble interactions

Journal of Neuroscience Methods, 1999
This paper illustrates the use of the recently introduced method of partial directed coherence in approaching how interactions among neural structures change over short time spans that characterize well defined behavioral states. Central to the method is its use of multivariate time series modelling in conjunction with the concept of Granger causality.

Partial directed coherence statistical performance characteristics in frequency domain

2015 37th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBC), 2015
In this work we show the asymptotic behavior of information partial directed coherence estimator via the Monte Carlo simulation of a particular toy model taken from the literature. We show that the control of false positive rate tends to the chosen significance level if detection decision is made at specific frequency values.

Partial directed coherence: a new concept in neural structure determination

Biological Cybernetics, 2001
This paper introduces a new frequency-domain approach to describe the relationships (direction of information flow) between multivariate time series based on the decomposition of multivariate partial coherences computed from multivariate autoregressive models.

Semiparametric detection of nonlinear causal coupling using partial directed coherence

2011 Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, 2011
Infering causal relationships from observed time series has attracted much recent attention. In cases of nonlinear coupling, adequate inference is often hindered by the need to specify coupling details that call for many parameters and global minimization of nonconvex functions.

Connectivity Inference between Neural Structures via Partial Directed Coherence

Journal of Applied Statistics, 2007
Abstract This paper describes the rigorous asymptotic distributions of the recently introduced partial directed coherence (PDC) – a frequency domain description of Granger causality between multivariate time series represented by vector autoregressive models. We show that, when not zero, PDC is asymptotically normally distributed and therefore provides

Classification of Interictal Epileptiform Discharges using Partial Directed Coherence

2017 IEEE 17th International Conference on Bioinformatics and Bioengineering (BIBE), 2017
This paper introduces the classification of patterns extracted from different types of interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) that includes interictal spike (IS), spike and slow wave complex (SSC), and repetitive spikes and slow wave complex (RSS)), using the partial directed coherence (PDC) analysis.

Analysis of maternal–fetal heart rate coupling directions with partial directed coherence

Biomedical Signal Processing and Control, 2016
Maternal psycho-physiological activities affect the fetal heart rate and heart rate variability. However, directions and patterns of maternal and fetal heartbeat coupling are still poorly understood. The aim of this study was to quantify the direction of short-term maternal–fetal cardiac coupling in early, mid and late gestation fetuses by using ...

Temporal cardiovascular causality during orthostatic stress by extended partial directed coherence

2019 41st Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBC), 2019
The aim of this study was to investigate the temporal dynamic behavior of cardiovascular interactions between heart period and systolic blood pressure during a 20-min head-up tilt test at 70° in young women with orthostatic intolerance compared to healthy women.
