PDTools: A toolbox of partial discharge (PD) signal analysis for transformer condition assessment

2017 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting, 2017
Partial discharge (PD) measurement of power transformers provides a means for condition assessment of their insulation systems. To reach an informed assessment on the condition of a transformer's insulation system, it needs to appropriately analyze the measured PD signals. Though abundant methods have been proposed for PD signal analysis, it is still a

Model for partial discharges associated with treeing breakdown: I. PDs in tree channels

Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, 2000
In order to check our physical model for partial discharges (PDs) in a tree channel, the light emission from a PD in an actual tree was observed. The experimental results agreed with the model. By using the model, conditions for the formation of typical phase-amplitude-number (-q-n) pattern of PDs from treeing was discussed.

Analysis and rejection of noises from partial discharge (PD) on-site testing environment

Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Properties and Applications of Dielectric Materials (Cat. No.03CH37417), 2004
There were many kinds of interference resources in the partial discharge on-site testing environment for a power transformer. According to their spectrums, those could be classified into sinusoidal continuous noises from power carrier communication and radio systems, pulse-shaped wide-band noises including periodical and stochastical pulse-shaped ...

PD data analysis and evaluation of partial discharge patterns for uniform characterisation

IEE Proceedings - Science, Measurement and Technology, 2004
A modern partial discharge (PD) analyser provides a complete record of PD events obtained during the time of observation. A variety of analysis techniques can be applied to the data to extract characteristic information. An analysis technique that would support instrument-independent characterisation needs to have a method of identifying characteristic

Long time exposure influence of partial discharge (PD) to coated printed circuit boards

Conference Record of the 1992 IEEE International Symposium on Electrical Insulation, 2003
The authors deal with the behavior of solid insulation under the long-term influence of partial discharges (PDs). As a very recent example for a low-voltage component with solid insulation, namely, the coated printed circuit board was investigated. The measurements necessary to evaluate the long-term influence of PDs were performed by computer-aided ...

Insulation design and evaluation via partial discharge (PD) test for power electronics application

2017 IEEE Electric Ship Technologies Symposium (ESTS), 2017
Insulation design is important for medium voltage level, high power density power electronic equipment. This is especially true in order to achieve a high reliability and long lifetime, in conjunction with a reasonable insulation size and weight that is important for electric ship applications.

Partial discharge (PD) detection on medium voltage switchgears using non-invasive sensing methods

2012 IEEE International Conference on Condition Monitoring and Diagnosis, 2012
Like in any high voltage asset, knowledge about the presence of partial discharge in the insulation system can provide vital information about the health condition of HV apparatuses. For switchgears, a traditional PD measurement according to IEC 60270 requires the disconnection of power cables from the switchgear, and the setup of a test circuit at the

Initiation and formation of partial discharges (PD) in mineral based insulating oil

Proceedings of 1993 IEEE 11th International Conference on Conduction and Breakdown in Dielectric Liquids (ICDL '93), 1994
This paper reports the results of fundamental investigations concerning the behavior of partial discharges (PD) in mineral-based oil with the aim of characterizing the physical mechanisms that lead to the initiation and formation of PD pulses. First the influence of the parameters temperature, moisture, pressure and oil condition on the PD inception ...

Some possible new applications of a partial‐discharge (PD) model and its relation to PD‐detection sensitivity

European Transactions on Electrical Power, 1996
AbstractIn this paper some possibilities of further applications of a known “Streamer Partial‐Discharge Model” are proposed. These possibilities refer to the relation between the observed partial‐discharge (PD) magnitude and the applied field to the insulation.

Improvement of partial discharge (PD) resistance of epoxy resin by using sulfur‐containing additives

Electrical Engineering in Japan, 1994
AbstractIn the field of high‐voltage engineering, it has been desired for a long time to improve the internal PD resistance of epoxy resin without lowering other properties. Recently, the authors discovered that some sulfur compound as curing agents or simple additives improved the PD resistance of rubber markedly, and here an attempt has been made to ...
