Effects of altered gravity on growth and morphology in Wolffia globosa implications for bioregenerative life support systems and space-based agriculture

open access: yesScientific Reports
Understanding the response of plants to varied gravitational conditions is vital for developing effective food production in space bioregenerative life support systems.

Absorption and scattering of a black hole with a global monopole in f(R) gravity

open access: yesPhysics Letters B, 2019
In this paper we consider the solution of a black hole with a global monopole in f(R) gravity and apply the partial wave approach to compute the differential scattering cross section and absorption cross section.

Programmable 3D Photovoltaics via Mechanically Origami‐Coded Interlocked 3D Kirigami and Nano‐Root Anchored AgNWs–In–Ga Multiphasic Alloy Conductor

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Mechanically origami‐coded 3D kirigami photovoltaics convert a single extension–release cycle into deterministic self‐folding, reconfiguring planar solar cells into programmable 3D modules. Distinct coding strategies enable either ultrahigh stretchability (500% system strain) or ultrahigh initial effective areal coverage (225%).

A Super‐Adhesive Air Filter With Capillarity‐Mediated Spontaneous Particle Absorption via Dynamic Bond Exchange

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
We address the inherently weak particle adhesion of conventional air filters by coating a dynamically crosslinked adhesive layer that delivers capillarity‐driven strong adhesion and particle absorption mediated by dynamic bond exchange. The resulting enhancement in particle adhesion enables efficient ultrafast (up to 20 m s−1) and omnidirectional ...

Rational Tuning of Hygroscopic Oscillation of Stacked Nanoflake Assemblies for Continuous Ambient Energy Harvesting

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Stacked nanoflake assembly (SNA) membranes can oscillate autonomously, offering opportunities for soft actuation and energy harvesting. This work uncovers the physical mechanism behind the sustained oscillation of SNA membranes in gradient humidity and identifies three governing dimensionless parameters, enabling rational design for optimizing SNA ...

Comparison of Microgravity Analogs to Spaceflight in Studies of Plant Growth and Development

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2019
Life on Earth has evolved under the influence of gravity. This force has played an important role in shaping development and morphology from the molecular level to the whole organism. Although aquatic life experiences reduced gravity effects, land plants

Cool flames at terrestrial, partial, and near-zero gravity

open access: yesCombustion and Flame, 2006
Natural convection plays an important role in all terrestrial, Lunar, and Martian-based, unstirred, static reactor cool flame and low-temperature autoignitions, since the Rayleigh number (Ra) associated with the self-heating of the reaction exceeds the critical Ra (approximately 600) for onset of convection.

Co1/Ru Single‐Atom Alloy Catalyst for Sustainable Polypropylene Hydrogenolysis to Long‐Chain Liquid Products

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A titania‐supported Co1/Ru single‐atom alloy catalyst enables efficient polypropylene hydrogenolysis. Ru─Co─Ru motifs maintain Ru activity while suppressing excessive chain scission to gaseous products. Both virgin and waste plastics achieve high, environmentally and economically optimal C11+ liquid yields, supporting sustainable chemical recycling ...
