Loss of Controllability in Partially Saturated Soils

2011
A study on saturation induced soil instability is presented. A constitutive model for unsaturated soils is linked to a theoretical approach able to deal with mechanical instability of fully saturated geomaterials. The theoretical approach is therefore extended to the more general case of partially saturated soils.

Partially saturated ferromagnetic cylinders

Journal of Applied Physics, 1984
The magnetostatics of a partially saturated ferromagnetic cylinder are calculated for the case where the susceptibility is infinite in the unsaturated region and Ms points along the direction of the internal field Hi for the saturated regions. The boundaries between the regions, the volume charge (∇⋅Ms) in the saturated regions and all the surface ...

Wave Simulation in Partially Saturated Porothermoelastic Media

IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 2022
In wave propagation in rocks, the strain field affects the internal energy such that compressed regions become hotter and expanded regions cooler. This thermoelastic effect is that the lack of thermal equilibrium between various parts of the vibrating medium and energy is dissipated when irreversible heat flow driven by the temperature gradient occurs.

On the mechanics of partially saturated soils

Computers and Geotechnics, 1991
Abstract This paper discusses a rule of decomposition of stresses in saturated soils based on average stress measures in the constituents. On the basis of this decomposition a mathematical framework for describing the mechanical response of partially saturated soils under undrained conditions is proposed.

Dynamics of partially saturated soils

SPIE Proceedings, 2000
In this work a fully coupled model for the dynamic analysis of partially saturated plastic soils including water and airflow is presented. The innovative contribution of this research mainly consists in the extension of the model to the dynamic analysis of porous media with two simultaneously flowing immiscible fluids.

A finite element model for water saturated and partially saturated geomaterials

Revue Française de Génie Civil, 2002
A finite element formulation for a saturated and partially saturated porous medium undergoing large elastic or inelastic deformations is presented. This model is derived from the general thermo-hydro-mechanical model for porous materials developed in a previous contribution of the authors to this lecture notes.

Acoustic signatures of partial saturation

Geophysics, 1998
Abstract The relationship between elastic wave velocities and water saturation in a water/gas reservoir depends strongly on whether saturation is heterogeneous (patchy) or homogeneous. Heterogeneity in saturation may result from lithologic heterogeneity because under conditions of capillary equilibrium, different lithologies within a ...

Clinical Use of the Partial Saturation and Saturation Recovery Sequences in MR Imaging

Journal of Computer Assisted Tomography, 1985
The partial saturation (PS) (90 degree-data collection) and saturation recovery (SR) [(90 degree-dephase)n-90 degree-data collection] sequences are described. The early data collection of the PS sequence is of value in demonstrating tissues with a short T2 such as articular cartilage and the annulus fibrosus.

Permeability determination of a deep argillite in saturated and partially saturated conditions

International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, 2004
This paper deals with the methods of determination of permeability in saturated and partially saturated conditions for low permeable porous rocks such as argillites. The modified version of the pulse test proposed by Hsieh et al. [Int. J. Rock Mech. Min. Sci. Geomech. Abstr.

Elastic wave velocities in partially saturated rocks: Saturation hysteresis

Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, 1996
An effective medium approach (differential self‐consistent scheme) has been used to calculate elastic wave velocities in rocks containing spherical pores and ellipsoidal cracks with two fluid phases. The results are applied to the case of imbibition/drainage processes performed in the laboratory (at high frequencies).
