We present different valuation methods and examine to what extent they avoid capitalizing and releasing future loadings which are associated with the payment of future premiums.

An Actuarial Analysis of Participating Life Insurance
Scandinavian Actuarial Journal, 2003An actuarial model is developed to reveal the intrinsic nature of participating life insurance. The basic safe-side criterion is examined. It is established how the first-order prospective net premium reserve includes safety margins or bonus loadings, and it is demonstrated how the bonus loadings are currently released.

Insurance: Mathematics and Economics, 1992Abstract The specific problem of portfolio selection by insurance companies is addressed in this paper. Assuming risk aversion on capital markets, it is optimal to transfer part of the investment risk to policyholders (participating policies), as done in life insurance. This remark leads to two results.
