A model of participatory learning

IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics, 1990
A model of learning called participatory learning is introduced. This model allows the representation of learning in environments in which what is already believed plays an important role in the process of learning further information. A central part of this system is the compatibility between observations and belief.

Participatory design of business models

Proceedings of the 12th Participatory Design Conference: Exploratory Papers, Workshop Descriptions, Industry Cases - Volume 2, 2012
The recent focus on user-driven innovation and open innovation signals a shift of concerns beyond the new product or service it self. The very model of how to make business is at play in most innovation projects today, in particular with the advent of Internet commerce. There are already examples of participatory design methods being applied to open up

Twelve Questions for the Participatory Modeling Community [PDF]

open access: yesEarth's Future, 2018
AbstractParticipatory modeling engages the implicit and explicit knowledge of stakeholders to create formalized and shared representations of reality and has evolved into a field of study as well as a practice. Participatory modeling researchers and practitioners who focus specifically on environmental resources met at the National Socio‐Environmental ...

Values in Participatory Modeling: Theory and Practice

2016
In this chapter, we reflect on some of our experiences as modelers engaged in participatory modeling by outlining some of the lessons we have learned. Specifically, we outline best practices for modelers seeking to engage in the process, identify trade-offs in evaluating model results, and present a call for future research to explicitly incorporate ...

PARTICIPATORY LEARNING: A CONSTRUCTIVIST MODEL

1989
Publisher Summary This chapter discusses a formal model of human and machine learning called participatory learning. This model allows the representation of machine learning in a constructivist framework. In this model, the learner's previous beliefs play an important role in the assimilation of further information.

Participatory business modelling

CoDesign, 2013
How to generate business is at play in most innovation projects today. Not only Internet-based businesses, but also traditional manufacturing companies with conventional product sales are currently challenged to consider alternative business models: service design, project sales, direct sales, etc.

Participatory modelling: Participatory research methods for sustainability ‐ toolkit #6

GAIA - Ecological Perspectives for Science and Society, 2023
Sustainability challenges require the integration of diverse knowledge types for understanding and managing social-ecological systems. Participatory modelling includes the active involvement of stakeholders in the design, development, and use of models addressing sustainability and natural resource management challenges.

Participatory 3D Modelling

2005
Mapping is a fundamental way for displaying spatial human cognition. “It is a representational medium that both has a history and is part of the practice of history” (Herrington, 2003). For centuries and increasingly with the advent of Geographic Information Technologies (GIT), graphic representations of part or the whole of Earth in cartographic ...

Modeling participatory learning as a control mechanism

International Journal of Intelligent Systems, 1993
Summary: We discuss the participatory learning model originally introduced by the first author [IEEE Trans. Syst. Man Cybern. SMC-20, 1229-1234 (1990)]. We analyze the learning mechanisms as a stable control strategy. We show how the learning mechanism used in participatory learning can be expressed in the form of a fuzzy rule base.

Genetic participatory algorithm and system modeling

Proceedings of the 15th annual conference companion on Genetic and evolutionary computation, 2013
This paper suggests a genetic participatory learning algorithm and illustates its use in fuzzy systems modeling. The algorithm emerges from the concepts of participatory learning, selective transfer, and differential evolution. In genetic participatory learning the current population plays an important role in shaping evolution of the population ...
