Discrete Element Modeling of Permanent Deformation Accumulation in Railroad Ballast Considering Particle Breakage

open access: yesFrontiers in Built Environment, 2020
Particle shape and mineralogy have been found to greatly affect railroad ballast response under train loading. In this research effort, the effect of particle breakage on ballast permanent deformation behavior was studied using the Discrete Element ...

Influence of an Argon/Silane Atmosphere on the Temperature of a Thermal Plasma

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The influence of a silane‐doped argon atmosphere on the chemical composition and temperature of a thermal nontransferring argon plasma is investigated using optical emission spectroscopy. As a result of the high amount of free electrons resulting from the stepwise ionization and dissociation of the silane molecule, even a silane addition of 0.01 vol ...

Particle Attrition in Small Clearances

open access: yesKONA Powder and Particle Journal, 2014
Attrition is commonly found in the clearances of equipment where a mechanical device moves relative to a wall. Particles are trapped and broken in these regions, hence promoting attrition.

Population of Nonmetallic Inclusions in Liquid High‐Silicon Electrical Steel in Contact With MgO–C Refractories Based on Recyclates and Environmentally Friendly Binders

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The formation of nonmetallic inclusions (NMIs) was investigated in this study, carrying out immersion tests for 30 min at a temperature of 1600°C with liquid high‐silicon electrical steel (Si ≈ 3 mass‐%) and different MgO–C refractories. Conventional MgO–C refractories were considered, as well as MgO–C refractories containing MgO–C recyclate and ...

Causes of breakage and disruption in a homogeniser [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Many authors have written in the past regarding the exact causes of breakage and disruption in a high pressure homogeniser, but there has been little agreement.

Engineering Deformation and Failure in Diamond Triply Periodic Minimal Surface Lattices via 3D Wall‐Thickness Grading

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The work demonstrates that strategic wall‐thickness grading in diamond triply periodic minimal surface lattices enables precise tuning of deformation and failure behavior under compression. Different gradation patterns guide how and where the structure collapses, improving energy absorption or promoting controlled brittle failure.

Aging in Structural Changes of Amorphous Solids: A Study of First Passage Time and Persistence Time Distribution

open access: yes, 2015
The time distribution of relaxation events in an aging system is investigated via molecular dynamics simulations. The focus is on the distribution functions of the first passage time, $p_1(\Delta t)$, and the persistence time, $p(\tau)$.

Exploring Dipolar Dynamics and Ionic Transport in Metal‐Organic Frameworks: Experimental and Theoretical Insights

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In this study, the interplay of dipolar dynamics and ionic charge transport in MOF compounds is investigated. Synthesizing the novel structure CFA‐25 with integrated freely rotating dipolar groups, local and macroscopic effects, including interactions with Cs cations are explored.

Nanocellulose Fragmentation Mechanisms and Inversion of Chirality from the Single Particle to the Cholesteric Phase

open access: yes, 2017
Understanding how nanostructure and nanomechanics influence physical material properties on the micro- and macroscale is an essential goal in soft condensed matter research.

A Three Dimensional Microflown [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
An integrated three dimensional acoustic particle velocity sensor is realized. The integration of multiple sensors on a single silicon die leads to improvements in terms of better a better reproducible sensor and a very small sensor to sensor distance ...
