Particles in Filter Effluent:  The Roles of Deposition and Detachment

Environmental Science & Technology, 2004
Particles in the effluent of granular media filters can be classified as influent particles that were never removed or as particles that detached after prior deposition. To determine the effects of particle size, filter media depth and filter run duration on the relative fraction of each class, laboratory experiments were performed using suspensions of

Characterization of Pelletized MoS2 Powder Particle Detachment Process

Journal of Tribology, 2000
A recently postulated concept of friction between solids states that the process exhibits elements of quasi-hydrodynamic lubrication in which the wear particles shed from one or both surfaces form an interface layer acting as a lubricant. Pellets were formed by compacting MoS2 powder.

Particle Detachment from Rough Surfaces in Turbulent Flows

The Journal of Adhesion, 1995
Two flow structure-based models for particle resuspension from rough surfaces in turbulent streams are developed. It is assumed that the real area of contact is determined by elastic deformation of asperities and the effect of topographic properties of surfaces are included.

Particle deposition and detachment in capillary sphere packings

Chemical Engineering Journal, 2011
Abstract Flow simulations in a random sphere packing are used to investigate particulate filtration processes. The local wall shear stress is used to calculate an angular dependent distribution for particle detachment. Simulations of particle deposition by interceptions yield the angular dependent number of impacts.

Detachment of colloidal particles from bentonites in water

Applied Clay Science, 2008
Abstract Bentonites are currently investigated as geotechnical barrier for sealing radioactive waste e.g. in HLRW repositories (HLRW = high level radioactive waste). Their favourable properties are low hydraulic permeability, cation exchange capacity as well as swelling capacity in contact with aqueous solutions.

Simulations of Particle Detachment From a Flat Surface

Volume 1B, Symposia: Fluid Measurement and Instrumentation; Fluid Dynamics of Wind Energy; Renewable and Sustainable Energy Conversion; Energy and Process Engineering; Microfluidics and Nanofluidics; Development and Applications in Computational Fluid Dynamics; DNS/LES and Hybrid RANS/LES Methods, 2017
Understanding particle detachment from surfaces is necessary to better characterize dust generation and entrainment in large-scale industries (such as metallurgical and foundry facilities, clean room settings, semiconductor device fabrication) and in health care (powder inhalers in pharmaceuticals, or the unwanted respiratory exposure to small ...

Electric Field Detachment of Charged Particles

1988
Electric field detachment of charged toner particles in the xerographic process is of central importance in the image development and transfer steps. The theoretical concepts for electric field detachment of single charged particles and particle layers are reviewed.

Experimental determination of energy barrier to particle detachment

Colloid & Polymer Science, 1992
The estimation of energy barrier to detachment of particles from a substrate was carried out. Detachment processes of 4 μm polyethylene particles from a quartz wall under the gravitational force in aqueous solutions were investigated by a direct observation technique.
