Particle motion: the missing link in underwater acoustic ecology [PDF]

open access: hybridMethods in Ecology and Evolution, 2016
Summary Sound waves in water have both a pressure and a particle‐motion component, yet few studies of underwater acoustic ecology have measured the particle‐motion component of sound. While mammal hearing is based on detection of sound pressure, fish and invertebrates (i.e. most aquatic animals) primarily sense sound using particle motion.

Theoretical Mechanics of Particle Capture: Predictions for Hydropsychid Caddisfly Distributional Ecology [PDF]

open access: greenThe American Naturalist, 1990
Computer simulations based on equations developed earlier were used to analyze theoretically the effects of six parameters on particle capture by hydropsychid caddisfly nets. If assumptions that form the basis of these simulations are valid, the following statements can be made. (1) Nets with fine meshes capture suspended particles at a higher rate per

Interplay between particle size and microbial ecology in the gut microbiome [PDF]

open access: greenThe ISME Journal
Abstract Physical particles can serve as critical abiotic factors that structure the ecology of microbial communities. For non-human vertebrate gut microbiomes, fecal particle size (FPS) has been known to be shaped by chewing efficiency and diet. However, little is known about what drives FPS in the human gut.

Microplastic burden in marine benthic invertebrates depends on species traits and feeding ecology within biogeographical provinces

open access: yesNature Communications, 2023
The microplastic body burden of marine animals is often assumed to reflect levels of environmental contamination, yet variations in feeding ecology and regional trait expression could also affect a species’ risk of contaminant uptake.

Particles, environments, and possible ecologies in the Jovian atmosphere [PDF]

open access: bronzeThe Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series, 1976
The eddy diffusion coefficient is estimated as a function of altitude, separately for the Jovian troposphere and mesosphere. Complex organic molecules produced by the Ly alpha photolysis of methane may possibly be the absorbers in the lower mesosphere which account for the low reflectivity of Jupiter in the near ultraviolet.

Transition probabilities for general birth-death processes with applications in ecology, genetics, and evolution [PDF]

open access: yesJ Math Biol, 65:553-580, 2012, 2011
A birth-death process is a continuous-time Markov chain that counts the number of particles in a system over time. In the general process with $n$ current particles, a new particle is born with instantaneous rate $\lambda_n$ and a particle dies with instantaneous rate $\mu_n$.

Viral ecology of organic and inorganic particles in aquatic systems: avenues for further research [PDF]

open access: bronzeAquatic Microbial Ecology, 2009
Viral abundance and processes in the water column and sediments are well studied for some systems; however, we know relatively little about virus-host interactions on particles and how particles influence these interactions. Here we review virus-prokaryote interactions on inorganic and organic particles in the water column.

Modeling of small sea floaters in the central Mediterranean Sea: seasonality of at-sea distributions [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
Floating marine debris represent a threat to marine and coastal ecology. Since the Mediterranean basin is one of the highly impacted regions, both by the coastal pollution as well as from sea traffic, the potential harm of a floating pollution on the marine ecology could be overwhelming in this area.

Spatial Prediction of Soil Particle-Size Fractions Using Digital Soil Mapping in the North Eastern Region of India

open access: yesLand, 2023
Numerous applications in agriculture, climate, ecology, hydrology, and the environment are severely constrained by the lack of detailed information on soil texture.
