Particles, environments, and possible ecologies in the Jovian atmosphere [PDF]

open access: bronzeThe Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series, 1976
The eddy diffusion coefficient is estimated as a function of altitude, separately for the Jovian troposphere and mesosphere. Complex organic molecules produced by the Ly alpha photolysis of methane may possibly be the absorbers in the lower mesosphere which account for the low reflectivity of Jupiter in the near ultraviolet.

'DIS_turbation': An Artistic Approach to Foster Nature-Connectedness [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Science and Technology of the Arts, 2021
This paper presents practice-based research on ecoacoustics, ocean soundscapes and anthropogenic noise. It explores creative strategies to the introduction, experience and performance of ocean soundscapes in artistic creation.

Particle motion: the missing link in underwater acoustic ecology [PDF]

open access: hybridMethods in Ecology and Evolution, 2016
Summary Sound waves in water have both a pressure and a particle‐motion component, yet few studies of underwater acoustic ecology have measured the particle‐motion component of sound. While mammal hearing is based on detection of sound pressure, fish and invertebrates (i.e. most aquatic animals) primarily sense sound using particle motion.

Transition probabilities for general birth-death processes with applications in ecology, genetics, and evolution [PDF]

open access: yesJ Math Biol, 65:553-580, 2012, 2011
A birth-death process is a continuous-time Markov chain that counts the number of particles in a system over time. In the general process with $n$ current particles, a new particle is born with instantaneous rate $\lambda_n$ and a particle dies with instantaneous rate $\mu_n$.

Modeling of small sea floaters in the central Mediterranean Sea: seasonality of at-sea distributions [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
Floating marine debris represent a threat to marine and coastal ecology. Since the Mediterranean basin is one of the highly impacted regions, both by the coastal pollution as well as from sea traffic, the potential harm of a floating pollution on the marine ecology could be overwhelming in this area.

Ecological non-linear state space model selection via adaptive particle Markov chain Monte Carlo (AdPMCMC) [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2010
We develop a novel advanced Particle Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm that is capable of sampling from the posterior distribution of non-linear state space models for both the unobserved latent states and the unknown model parameters. We apply this novel methodology to five population growth models, including models with strong and weak Allee effects,

Tracer-based investigation of organic aerosols in marine atmospheres from marginal seas of China to the northwest Pacific Ocean [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2020
We investigated the geographic distributions of organic tracers in total suspended particles over the marginal seas of China, including the Yellow and Bohai seas (YBS) and the South China Sea (SCS), and the northwest Pacific Ocean (NWPO) in spring, when ...

Organosolv lignin particles as an ecological reagents in the Kupfershiefer copper ore flotation

open access: yesPhysicochemical Problems of Mineral Processing, 2023
Mineral separation relies heavily on the process of flotation. This study explored the feasibility of using organosolv lignin nanoparticles and microparticles (OLP) as a greener alternative to xanthates in the flotation process for mineral separation. Xanthates are widely used but pose environmental and health risks. The efficiency of OLP as collectors
