Tracer-based investigation of organic aerosols in marine atmospheres from marginal seas of China to the northwest Pacific Ocean [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2020
We investigated the geographic distributions of organic tracers in total suspended particles over the marginal seas of China, including the Yellow and Bohai seas (YBS) and the South China Sea (SCS), and the northwest Pacific Ocean (NWPO) in spring, when ...

Investigation of the Uniformity of Gel Shrinkage by Imaging Tracer Particles Using X‐Ray Microtomography

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView., 2023
A novel method for tracking structural changes in gels using widely accessible microcomputed tomography is presented and validated for various hydro‐, alco‐, and aerogels. The core idea of the method is to track positions of micrometer‐sized tracer particles entrapped in the gel and relate them to the density of the gel network.

Organosolv lignin particles as an ecological reagents in the Kupfershiefer copper ore flotation

open access: yesPhysicochemical Problems of Mineral Processing, 2023
Mineral separation relies heavily on the process of flotation. This study explored the feasibility of using organosolv lignin nanoparticles and microparticles (OLP) as a greener alternative to xanthates in the flotation process for mineral separation. Xanthates are widely used but pose environmental and health risks. The efficiency of OLP as collectors

Defective subviral particles modify ecological equilibria and enhance viral coexistence

open access: yesFrontiers in Virology, 2022
ABSTRACTCooperation is a main driver of biological complexity at all levels. In the viral world, gene sharing among viral genomes, complementation between genomes or interactions within quasispecies are frequently observed. In this contribution, we explore the advantages that flexible associations between fully fledged viruses and subviral entities ...

Particulate and Dissolved Black Carbon in Bohai and Laizhou Bays, China: Distributions, Sources, and Contrasts Under Two Distinct Fluvial Hydrological Regimes

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2021
Coastal seas, including coastal bays, are the geographically critical transitional zone that links terrestrial and open oceanic ecosystems. Organic carbon cycling in this area is a dynamic and disproportionally key component in the global carbon cycle ...

Active Phases for Particles on Resource Landscapes [PDF]

open access: yesPhys. Rev. Res. 4, 013061 (2022), 2021
We introduce an active matter model composed of sterically interacting particles which absorb resources from a substrate and move in response to resource gradients. For varied ratios of absorption rate to substrate recovery rate, we find a variety of phases including periodic waves, partial clustering, stochastic motion, and a frozen state.

Microplastic burden in marine benthic invertebrates depends on species traits and feeding ecology within biogeographical provinces

open access: yesNature Communications, 2023
The microplastic body burden of marine animals is often assumed to reflect levels of environmental contamination, yet variations in feeding ecology and regional trait expression could also affect a species’ risk of contaminant uptake.
