A dynamic large-deformation particle finite element method for geotechnical applications based on Abaqus

open access: yesJournal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, 2023
In this paper, the application of Abaqus-based particle finite element method (PFEM) is extended from static to dynamic large deformation. The PFEM is based on periodic mesh regeneration with Delaunay triangulation to avoid mesh distortion.

Geotechnical particle finite element method for modeling of soil-structure interaction under large deformation conditions

open access: yesJournal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, 2022
The possibilities of the particle finite element method (PFEM) for modeling geotechnical problems are increasingly evident. PFEM is a numerical approach to solve large displacement and large strain continuum problems that are beyond the capabilities of ...

Study on Numerical Simulation Methods for Hypervelocity Impact on Large-Scale Complex Spacecraft Structures

open access: yesAerospace, 2021
This paper aims to study the difference of results in breakup state judgment, debris cloud and fragment characteristic parameter during hypervelocity impact (HVI) on large-scale complex spacecraft structures by various numerical simulation methods.

Enrichment of the Finite Element Method With the Reproducing Kernel Particle Method [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Applied Mechanics, 1997
The reproducing kernel particle method (RKPM) has attractive properties in handling high gradients, concentrated forces, and large deformations where other widely implemented methodologies fail. In the present work, a multiple field computational procedure is devised to enrich the finite element method with RKPM, and RKPM with analytical functions. The

Review of Particle-Based Computational Methods and Their Application in the Computational Modelling of Welding, Casting and Additive Manufacturing

open access: yesMetals, 2023
A variety of particle-based methods have been developed for the purpose of computationally modelling processes that involve, for example, complex topological changes of interfaces, significant plastic deformation of materials, fluid flow in conjunction ...

Modeling Grinding Processes—Mesh or Mesh-Free Methods, 2D or 3D Approach?

open access: yesJournal of Manufacturing and Materials Processing, 2022
The objectives of this study are mainly two: (1) to validate whether a single grain scratch process can be modeled in two dimensions under the assumption of plane strain, and (2) to select the best discretization approach to model a single grain scratch ...

Shockwaves in spillways with the particle finite element method [PDF]

open access: yesComputational Particle Mechanics, 2020
Changes in direction and cross section in supercritical hydraulic channels generate shockwaves which result in an increase in flow depth with regard to that for uniform regime. These disturbances are propagated downstream and need to be considered in the design of the chute walls.
