Micrometer-scale 3-D shape characterization of eight cements: Particle shape and cement chemistry, and the effect of particle shape on laser diffraction particle size measurement

open access: yes, 2010
Eight different portland cements were imaged on a synchrotron beam line at Brookhaven National Laboratory using X-ray microcomputed tomography at a voxel size of about 1 mu m per cubic voxel edge.

Molecular characterization of covRS mutations in M1UK Streptococcus pyogenes

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Group A Streptococcus (GAS) acquires covRS mutations driving a hypervirulent bacterial state, frequently associated with invasive disease‐like necrotizing fasciitis. We demonstrate that the newly emerged M1UK GAS lineage can also acquire these mutations.

Some Experiments on Fitting of Gielis Curves by Simulated Annealing and Particle Swarm Methods of Global Optimization

open access: yes
In this paper an attempt has been made to fit the Gielis curves (modified by various functions) to simulated data. The estimation has been done by two methods - the Classical Simulated Annealing (CSA) and the Particle Swarm (PS) methods - of global ...

Particle Shape-Driven Stiffness Anisotropy in Calcareous Sand and the Underlying Mechanism

open access: yesApplied Sciences
The angular shape and breakage of particles for calcareous sand significantly influence its mechanical behavior and the safety of the engineering. Although previous studies have explored the impact of particle shape on the mechanical properties of ...

Evaluating the involvement of autolysosomes in the nuclear translocation of fluorescent proteins

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Endogenously expressed fluorescent proteins can be degraded by autophagy and transported to cell nuclei via the nuclear pore complex. But in some cell lines, for example, HeLa cells which are positive for immunoreactivity of a receptor ligand, such as UCN I, in cell nuclei, fusion of autolysosome with the nuclear envelope is involved in the nuclear ...

Scaling Of Discrete Element Model Parameters In Uniaxial Test Simulation

open access: yes, 2013
This study investigates the scaling of DEM model parameters that are necessary to produce scale independent predictions for cohesionless and cohesive solid under confined compression and unconfined compression to failure.

How phagocytic cells kill bacteria: Lessons from a professional killer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
How phagocytic cells ingest and kill bacteria has been studied for more than a century, but many questions remain unanswered. The study of the amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum brings new answers, and new questions. Professional phagocytic cells such as neutrophils and macrophages, as well as free‐living soil amoebae like Dictyostelium discoideum, employ
