DEM study on the effect of particle shape on the shear behaviour of granular materials [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
This study investigates the effects of particle convexity, sphericity and aspect ratio (AR) on the behaviour of sheared granular materials using two-dimensional discrete element method (DEM) simulations.

Performance Parameters and Characterizations of Nanocrystals: A Brief Review

open access: yesPharmaceutics, 2016
Poor bioavailability of drugs associated with their poor solubility limits the clinical effectiveness of almost 40% of the newly discovered drug moieties.

Shape matters: Competing mechanisms of particle shape segregation

open access: yesPhysical Review E, 2022
It is well-known that granular mixtures that differ in size or shape segregate when sheared. In the past, two mechanisms have been proposed to describe this effect, and it is unclear if both exist. To settle this question, we consider a bidisperse mixture of spheroids of equal volume in a rotating drum, where the two mechanisms are predicted to act in ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Estimating Particle Shape and Orientation Using Volume Tensors

open access: yes, 2015
We develop statistical procedures for estimating shape and orientation of arbitrary three-dimensional particles. We focus on the case where particles cannot be observed directly, but only via sections.

On the Performance of the Box Particle Filter for Extended Object Tracking Using Laser Data [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
This paper considers the challenging task of real time extended object tracking using cluttered measurements from laser range scanners. The performance of the recently proposed Box Particle Filter (Box PF) algorithm is evaluated utilising real ...

Particle Shape Effect on Macroscopic Behaviour of Underground Structures: Numerical and Experimental Study

open access: yesStudia Geotechnica et Mechanica, 2015
The mechanical performance of underground flexible structures such as buried pipes or culverts made of plastics depend not only on the properties of the structure, but also on the material surrounding it.

Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Zener Pinning by Differently Shaped and Oriented Particles

open access: yesFrontiers in Materials, 2021
Zener pinning between a curved Cu grain boundary (GB) and a differently shaped and oriented Ag particle has been simulated via molecular dynamics. The computed magnitudes of the maximum pinning force agreed with theoretical predictions only when the ...

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

The effects of particle size, shape, density and flow characteristics on particle margination to vascular walls in cardiovascular diseases [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Introduction: Vascular-targeted drug delivery is a promising approach for the treatment of atherosclerosis, due to the vast involvement of endothelium in the initiation and growth of plaque, a characteristic of atherosclerosis.
