Mercury stable isotopes revealing the atmospheric mercury circulation: A review of particulate bound mercury in China [PDF]

open access: yesEarth-Science Reviews
Human activities since industrialization have significantly raised global atmospheric mercury (Hg) levels. China's high Hg emissions with rapid industrial development have a global impact on implementing the Minamata Convention on Mercury due to the ...

Measurement of size-fractionated particulate-bound mercury in Beijing and implications on sources and dry deposition of mercury

Science of the Total Environment, 2019
Particulate-bound mercury (PBM) plays an important role in the Hg cycling and is with high concentration in urban area. Totally 10-staged (range of 0.01-10μm) size-fractionated PBM was measured in Beijing during December 2016-November 2017. Our study indicated that Beijing suffered from heavy PBM pollution, with an annual average of 297.9 (17.2-1906.6)

Total Mercury and Particulate-Bound Mercury Concentrations and Content in Ambient Air in Central Taiwan

Environmental Forensics, 2012
Total gaseous mercury (TGM) concentration in ambient air, particulate-bound mercury concentrations and particulate-bound mercury contents in total suspended particles (TSP) from locations in Central Taiwan were measured and discussed relative to their ranges and potential sources.

Sources and Transformation Mechanisms of Atmospheric Particulate Bound Mercury Revealed by Mercury Stable Isotopes

open access: yesEnvironmental Science & Technology, 2022
This study examined the isotopic composition of particulate bound mercury (PBM) in 10 Chinese megacities and explored the associated sources and transformation mechanisms. PBM in these cities was characterized by negative δ202Hg (mean: -2.00 to -0.78‰), slightly negative to highly positive Δ199Hg (mean: -0.04 to 0.47‰), and slightly positive Δ200Hg ...

Characterizations of atmospheric particulate-bound mercury in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal, South Asia

Science of the Total Environment, 2017
The Kathmandu Valley, located in the Himalayan foothills in Nepal, is heavily polluted. In order to investigate ambient particulate-bound mercury (Hg) in the Kathmandu Valley, a total 64 total suspended particulates (TSP) samples were collected from a sub-urban site in the Kathmandu Valley, the capital region of Nepal during a sampling period of an ...

Particulate-Bound Mercury (Hg[p]) Size Distributions in Central Taiwan

Environmental Forensics, 2012
This study focuses on particulate-bound Hg (Hg[p]) composition (ng/g) (defined as ng/g), concentrations (ng/m3) and dry deposition (ng/m2*min) variations for PM18, PM10, PM2.5, and PM1.0. Three characteristic sampling sites collected 1-day ambient suspended particles during November and December 2010 using MOUDI-100S4 samplers. Additionally, Hg(p) size

Measurements and Distribution of Atmospheric Particulate-Bound Mercury: A Review

Bulletin of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, 2019
Atmospheric particulate-bound mercury (PBM) plays an important role in the geochemical cycling of mercury (Hg). This study reviewed research progress of the PBM, including the possible emission and deposition pathways, measurement methods and the global distribution. The primary PBM sources are anthropogenic sources, but natural sources could be also a

Comparison of 4 Methods for Measurement of Reactive, Gaseous Oxidized, and Particulate Bound Mercury

open access: yesEnvironmental Science & Technology, 2019
The atmosphere is an important (1) pathway by which mercury (Hg) is transported around the globe and (2) source of Hg to ecosystems. Thus, understanding Hg atmospheric chemistry is critical for understanding the biogeochemical cycle and impacts to human and ecosystem health. Work over the past 13 years has demonstrated that the standard instrument used

Isotopic investigation of sources and processes affecting gaseous and particulate bound mercury in the east coast, South Korea

Science of the Total Environment, 2023
Understanding sources and processes affecting atmospheric mercury (Hg) are key to enabling targeted Hg managements under the Minamata Convention on Mercury. We employed stable isotopes (δ202Hg, Δ199Hg, Δ201Hg, Δ200Hg, Δ204Hg) and backward air trajectories to characterize sources and processes affecting total gaseous Hg (TGM) and particulate bound Hg ...

Measurement of Particulate Bound Mercury, Gaseous Elemental Mercury, and Reactive Gaseous Mercury Concentrations by Using an Ambient Air Mercury Collection System

Environmental Forensics, 2015
In this investigation, the concentrations of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM), reactive gaseous mercury (RGM) and particulate bound mercury (PBM) in ambient air were measured at the Hung Kuang (traffic) sampling site during September 27 to October 6, 2014.
