Prostaglandins and parturition
Reproduction, Fertility and Development, 1995It seems likely that prostaglandins play a significant part in the mechanisms of parturition both at term and preterm. Concentrations of prostaglandins are increased in the blood, urine and amniotic fluid during labour. There are differences in the concentrations of prostaglandins in amniotic fluid from the forebag and hindbag.

Reproductive success is critical for survival of the species. The timely onset of labor and delivery is an important determinant of perinatal outcome. Both preterm birth (defined as delivery before 37 weeks' gestation) and post-term pregnancy (defined as pregnancy continuing beyond 42 weeks) are associated with a significant increase in perinatal ...

Propranolol is a beta-adrenergic blocking drug with a wide spectrum of use and may diverse pharmacologic effects. This case report is an example of a parturient who was on a large dose of propranolol for idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis. The effects of this drug on pregnancy, labor, and above all, the fetus are discussed.

Endocrine immune interactions in human parturition [PDF]
Human parturition is an inflammatory event, modulated and influenced by a host of other environmental and physiological processes, including the endocrine hormones. Complex bidirectional communication occurs between the two systems to bring about some of

Prevention of Preterm Parturition
New England Journal of Medicine, 2014This article reviews risk factors for preterm delivery, with special attention to previous preterm birth and a short cervix. Strategies for minimizing the risk of preterm birth among high-risk women, including progesterone supplementation and cerclage, are discussed.

Initiation of human parturition
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1980Arachidonic acid (the precursor of prostaglandins of the 2-series and related compounds) is released from phosphatidylinositol in a reaction sequence catalyzed by three enzymes, i.e., phospholipase C, diacylglycerol lipase, and monoacylglycerol lipase. Diacylglycerol, an intermediate in this pathway, was found in human amnion tissue.

The role of oxytocin in parturition
BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, 2003Oxytocin and the oxytocin receptor have two important roles in labour. Evidence in all mammalian species suggests that neurohypophysical oxytocin plays a role in the expulsive phase and, although there are less supporting data, a role for oxytocin in the initiation of labour is likely.
