Hull-superstructure interaction in optimised passenger ships

Ships and Offshore Structures, 2011
The paper investigates the interaction between the hull and the superstructure in optimised passenger ships when exposed to bending loads. The coupled beam theory was applied to extend the basic beam theory to take into account the vertical and shear stiffness between various decks.

Fire Safety Onboard Passenger Ships

Design and Operation of Passenger Ships 2011, 2011
The general arrangements inside passenger ships are getting more complicated to fulfil the passengers' expectations in comfort, luxury and variety of services. Hence, with the new designs, safety is becoming a target hard to achieve and especially regarding fire safety where the new materials and complexity in arrangement can pose great hazards ...

Tourism and passenger shipping

The Tourist Review, 1950
Given the desire to travel, which is so markedly manifest in present day life, only the cost of transport and holiday services will set a limit to the rate of growth of tourist travel.

Gastrointestinal Illness on Passenger Cruise Ships

JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1975
Medical logs of 2,445 cruises taken by 38 vessels over a 20-month period beginning Jan 1, 1972, were reviewed. On 92% of the cruises, the recorded incidence of gastrointestinal illness was 1% or less; on 2% of cruises, it was 5% or greater. The actual incidence of gastrointestinal illness determined by a questionnaire survey of passengers sailing on ...

Odour Load from Passenger Ships

2008
Odour emissions from passenger ships were noticed while making field investigation for ship yard in Finland. Local authors wanted to know odour load of ships because they have planned to build a new residential area near to passenger harbour. Odour load from ships were determined with field investigation, emission measurements and dispersion ...

Passenger Ship Evacuation – Design and Verification

2014
This paper introduces the concept of escape and evacuation from passenger ships from a perspective of ship design and risk management. As part of that process, the use of computer simulation tools for analysing the evacuation performance of ships carrying large numbers of persons on board is becoming more relevant and useful.

Hull beam behaviour of passenger ships

Marine Structures, 1991
Abstract Cut-outs for windows in the side plating of passenger ships reduce the shear stiffness of the hull girder considerably. As a consequence the hull girder will not fulfill the requirements of the engineering theory for stesses in beams. A simplified method is proposed for design purposes utilizing the finite element method.
