Four new species of Brueelia Kéler, 1936 (Phthiraptera: Ischnocera) from African hosts, with a redescription of Nirmus bicurvatus Piaget, 1880

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Taxonomy, 2019
Four new species of Brueelia Kéler, 1936 are described and illustrated. All of them parasitize African endemic host species in the families Passeridae, Ploceidae, and Estrildidae (Passeriformes). They are: Brueelia pofadderensis sp. nov.

Classification of bird species from video using appearance and motion features [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The monitoring of bird populations can provide important information on the state of sensitive ecosystems; however, the manual collection of reliable population data is labour-intensive, time-consuming, and potentially error prone.

Species-Dependent Effects of the Urban Environment on Fatty Acid Composition and Oxidative Stress in Birds

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2017
Ecological impacts of urbanization include the loss of biodiversity and changes in species composition and population densities. However, how the urban environment affects fundamental physiological parameters is largely unknown.

Genetic and phenotypic divergence in an island bird: isolation by distance, by colonization or by adaptation? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Discerning the relative roles of adaptive and nonadaptive processes in generating differences among populations and species, as well as how these processes interact, is a fundamental aim in biology.

Combined Effects of Plateau Pikas (Ochotona curzoniae) and Yak Grazing (Bos grunniens) on Habitat Suitability for Alpine Passeridae Birds in Xizang Plateau, China

open access: yesBirds
The combined effects of plateau pikas and yak grazing on the distribution or occupancy of endemic passeridae birds on the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau, China remain largely unknown.

A case of leucism in House Sparrow, Passer domesticus (Linnaeus, 1758) in an island of São Francisco river, northeastern Brazil [PDF]

open access: yesBiotemas, 2012
Leucism in birds is a genetic disorder characterized by the total absence of melanin in some or all feathers, but unlike albinism, the other body parts, such as eyes, beak, and tarsi remain with the typical color of the species.

Sperm mtDNA Copy Number Is Not Associated With Midpiece Size Among Songbirds. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
We investigated mtDNA copy number in 19 wild passerine species representing more than a 100‐fold variation in midpiece length. Using highly accurate ddPCR quantification technology, we show that wild songbird spermatozoa have a relatively low interspecific variation of mtDNA content.

Environmental factors influence both abundance and genetic diversity in a widespread bird species. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Genetic diversity is one of the key evolutionary variables that correlate with population size, being of critical importance for population viability and the persistence of species. Genetic diversity can also have important ecological consequences within
