Host‐feeding preferences of Culex pipiens and its potential significance for flavivirus transmission in the Camargue, France

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, EarlyView.
We identified Culex pipiens bloodmeals at the species level in natural, agricultural and peri‐urban habitats and calculated host preferences based on forage ratios. This analysis showed Passeriformes, and in particular Columba livia, Passer montanus and Turdus sp., to be the preferred Cx. pipiens hosts.

Phylogeny and biogeography of Oriolidae (Aves: Passeriformes) [PDF]

open access: yesEcography, 2010
Understanding oscine passerine dispersal patterns out of their Australian area of origin is hampered by a paucity of robust phylogenies. We constructed a molecular phylogeny of the oscine family, Oriolidae, which is distributed from Australia through to the Old World.

Assembly of female and male hihi genomes (stitchbird; Notiomystis cincta) enables characterization of the W chromosome and resources for conservation genomics

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, Volume 25, Issue 5, July 2025.
Abstract A high‐quality reference genome can be a valuable resource for threatened species by providing a foundation to assess their evolutionary potential to adapt to future pressures such as environmental change. We assembled the genome of a female hihi (Notiomysits cincta), a threatened passerine bird endemic to Aotearoa New Zealand.

Chromosomes of Three Species of Muscicapidae (Passeriformes) [PDF]

open access: yesCaryologia, 1989
SUMMARYThree species of birds, namely Chrysomma sinense hypoteucum, Orthotomus sutorius guzuratus and Prinia socialis stewarti, carry a diploid number of 76, 84 and 72 chromosomes, respectively. The karyotypic and morphometric details of their complements have also been given.

Predicting wildlife reservoirs and global vulnerability to zoonotic Flaviviruses. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Flaviviruses continue to cause globally relevant epidemics and have emerged or re-emerged in regions that were previously unaffected. Factors determining emergence of flaviviruses and continuing circulation in sylvatic cycles are incompletely understood.

Foraging niche partitioning within a recently established guild of falcons

open access: yesIbis, Volume 167, Issue 3, Page 734-749, July 2025.
Ecological theory predicts that coexisting species should exhibit realized niche differentiation to minimize competition. However, little is known about patterns of niche differentiation when ‘newcomer’ species spontaneously colonize a new region, leading to novel sympatric conditions.

Responsiveness to photostimulation in two passeriform birds

open access: yesEnvironment Conservation Journal, 2011
Two studies were performed to analyze the photoperiodic interaction of testicular growth in brahminy myna and weaver bird. In the first study, birds were exposed to stimulatory long day lengths (15L:9D) and natural day length (NDL) for 60 days. The second study investigated the interpretation of a light pulse as ‘morning (entraining)’ or ‘evening ...

Karyotypes of four bird species of the order Passeriformes [PDF]

open access: yesHereditas, 2009
The karyotypes of four bird species in the order Passeriformes have been studied. The results further confirm that in birds, the karyotypes of closely related species are only slightly different. One of the species investigated, Chloris chloris, shows a special feature. Chromosome No. I can be either an st chromosome or an sm chromosome probably due to
