A new dimension for piezo actuators: Free-form out-of-plane displacement of single piezo layers

open access: yes, 2013
We present a controlled mode of "topological" displacement of homogeneous piezo films that arises solely from an inhomogeneous in-plane strain due to an inhomogeneous polarization.

General Corrosion and Passive Film Stability [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
We have studied Alloy 22 corrosion and passive film stability in nitrogen-purged Na-K-Cl-NO{sub 3} brines having NO{sub 3}:Cl ratios of 7.4 at 160 C and NO{sub 3}:Cl ratios of 0.5 and 7.4 at 220 C in autoclave experiments under a slight pressure. The experiments were done to show the effect of high nitrate brines on the durability of the Alloy 22 outer

Liquid Crystalline Inverted Lipid Phases and Reverse Micelles in Drug Delivery: From Molecular Design to Therapeutic Potential

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Liquid crystalline inverted lipid phases and reverse micelles are self‐assembled lipid nanostructures that enhance the solubility, stability, and delivery of diverse therapeutics. This review integrates their physicochemical principles, formulation strategies, drug loading mechanisms, and biomedical applications, highlighting their growing ...

Real‐Time, Label‐Free Monitoring of Cell Behavior on a Bioelectronic Scaffold

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A bioelectronic nanofibrous scaffold is introduced that supports cell growth while enabling real‐time, label‐free monitoring of cellular behavior through impedance measurements. The system correlates electrical signals with cell viability and surface coverage, offering an integrated platform for studying dynamic biological processes and advancing next ...

Zwitterionic Self‐Assembled Monolayer for Simultaneous Noise Suppression and Hole Extraction in High‐Performance Near‐Infrared Organic Photodetectors

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents a new hole transporting material (HTM) mechanism for self‐assembled monolayers in near‐infrared organic photodetectors. The formation of zwitterions induces a strong electric field that significantly increases the work function of HTM‐coated indium tin oxide substrates. The devices exhibit low dark current and noise, along with high

Thermal bistability through coupled photonic resonances

open access: yes, 2017
We present a scheme for achieving thermal bistability based on the selective coupling of three optical resonances. This approach requires one of the resonant frequencies to be temperature dependent, which can occur in materials exhibiting strong thermo ...

Suppression of Photo‐Mediated Traps in Integrated Organic Photovoltaic–Photodetector Devices via N‐Type Self‐Assembly‐Driven Interfacial Engineering

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Conventional unstable electron transport layers (ETLs) limit self‐powered organic sensors. This work resolves this by developing a n‐type self‐assembled monolayer (SAM), “3‐PAPh”. This SAM forms a chemically stable and structurally ordered interface that fundamentally suppresses defect formation.

A model for retention on short, intermediate and long time-scale in ferroelectric thin films

open access: yes, 2008
We developed a model with no adjustable parameter for retention loss at short and long time scale in ferroelectric thin-film capacitors. We found that the predictions of this model are in good agreement with the experimental observations in the ...

Digital Actuation Control of Soft Robotic Origami With Self‐Folding Liquid Crystal Elastomer Hinges

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Self‐folding soft‐rigid hybrid robotic origami is enabled by liquid crystal elastomer actuators with embedded Joule heating and closed‐loop digital control. Digitally addressable hinges provide reversible and programmable transitions between distinct folded states while maintaining actuation performance at high cycle counts (over 1500).

Micro-Capillary Electrochemical and Microscopic Investigations of Massive and Individual Micrometer-Sized Powder Particles of Stainless Steel 316L

open access: yesInternational Journal of Electrochemical Science, 2012
Material properties, corrosion, and metal release from stainless steel powders are important factors to assess any occupational health hazards. This paper elucidates the corrosion behavior of stainless steel particles (inert-gas-atomized AISI 316L ...
