Passive Filters—Potentialities and Limitations

New topologies for harmonic mitigation and active filters have come a long way, and these address the line-harmonic control at the source. These mitigate some of the disadvantages of passive filters, however, for nonlinear loads above 1 MW the passive filters are an economical choice.

Passive cascaded lattice digital filters

Energy relations are developed for the analysis of cascaded two pair lattice digital filters, where the individual sections are passive. Conditions of the passivity are shown in the form of inequalities containing parameters of the section, which are described as linear four-pole networks.

Active simulation of passive filters

In addition to the methods presented in Chapter 11 for realizing high-order active filters, there is another entirely different approach to the same end. This other approach is to take a passive filter and simulate it by means of active devices and circuits. We shall devote this chapter to techniques in and examples of this approach.
