Environmental and Ecological Monitoring with Biodegradable Technologies. [PDF]

open access: yesAdv Sci (Weinh)
This review examines the development and application of wireless biodegradable sensors for environmental monitoring. It explores (bio)degradable materials, their degradation mechanisms in various environments, and non‐toxic fabrication techniques. Additionally, it addresses scalable production and sustainable powering solutions, emphasizing the high ...

Hydroacoustic Travel Time Variations as a Proxy for Passive Deep‐Ocean Thermometry—A Cookbook

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 127, Issue 5, May 2022., 2022
Abstract We report on the extraction of deep ocean travel time variations from time‐lapse cross‐correlations between a hydrophone station and a three‐component broadband seismometer. The signals we cross‐correlate in this study result from repeated activity by the Monowai seamount, one of the most active submarine volcanoes of the Tonga‐Kermadec ridge.

High performance architecture design for large scale fibre-optic sensor arrays using distributed EDFAs and hybrid TDM/DWDM [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
A distributed amplified dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) array architecture is presented for interferometric fibre optic sensor array systems. This architecture employs a distributed erbium doped fibre amplifier (EDFA) scheme to decrease the

Feasibility of Ocean Acoustic Waveguide Remote Sensing (OAWRS) of Atlantic Cod with Seafloor Scattering Limitations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Recently reported declines in the population of Atlantic cod have led to calls for additional survey methods for stock assessments. In combination with conventional line-transect methods that may have ambiguities in sampling fish populations, Ocean ...

It's Not a Bug, It's a Feature: Functional Materials in Insects

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, Volume 30, Issue 19, May 10, 2018., 2018
Insects have evolved manifold optimized solutions to everyday problems. The diversity and precision of their hierarchical material adaptations often outsmart and outperform current man‐made approaches. These materials hence provide an excellent basis for the inspiration of new technological approaches by taking design cues from nature's solutions ...

Digital beamforming antenna array with polarisation multiplexing for mobile high‐speed satellite terminals at Ka‐band

open access: yesThe Journal of Engineering, Volume 2016, Issue 6, Page 180-188, June 2016., 2016
In this contribution, a planar antenna array terminal for mobile satellite communications at Ka‐band is proposed. This Earth station on mobile platform uses separate transmit and receive apertures to obtain a flat design well suited for aeronautical applications.
