A passive sonar system based on an autonomous underwater vehicle

IEEE Journal of Oceanic Engineering, 2001
Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) are typically used to "actively" probe the ocean, using sensors that are mounted on a vehicle that moves through the water column. A more challenging task is to use an AUV to position a bottom-mounted stationary platform, such as a passive sonar that requires a large aperture.

Passive sonar fusion for submarine C/sup 2/ systems

IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Magazine, 2000
The most important sensors for gathering target information onboard a submarine are passive sonars. Problems concerning fusion of these passive sonars are discussed. Three typical passive sonars-passive noise sonar, passive ranging sonar and acoustic pulse surveillance sonar-constitute a passive sonar system for data fusion.

Efficient Decimation Filter Design for Lofargram Analysis in Passive Sonar Systems

IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement, 2006
A new class of low-sensitivity decimation filters based on the polyphase decomposition of infinite impulse response (IIR) transfer functions is proposed. The design approach makes use of optimized positioning of poles and zeros so that transfer functions having unequal numerator and denominator orders are obtained.

Implementation of adaptive and synthetic-aperture processing schemes in integrated active-passive sonar systems

Proceedings of the IEEE, 1998
Progress in the implementation of state-of-the-art signal processing schemes in sonar systems is limited mainly by the moderate advance made in sonar computing architectures and the lack of operational evaluation of the advanced processing schemes. Until recently, matrix-based processing techniques, such as adaptive and synthetic-aperture processing ...

Are universal beamformers passive cognitive sonar systems?

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2022
Cognitive sonars dynamically tune system parameters to improve performance in pursuit of specific goals. Most research on cognitive sonar focuses on active sonar, varying the transmitted waveform and ping rate. Although passive sonar also faces the challenges of pursuing goals in varying and unknown environments, little research has been done exploring

Sonar Operator Performance Considerations in Passive Sonar Systems

Proceedings of the Human Factors Society Annual Meeting, 1975
Because of rapid developments in passive sonar technology, man-machine interface problems continue to demand human factors studies. This paper discusses display problems, operator variables, and research considerations. Data are presented from a recent study conducted by the authors comparing performance with photographic and static stimulus materials
