Strategy for Detection and High-Resolution Characterization of Authigenic Carbonate Cold Seep Habitats Using Ships and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles on Glacially Influenced Terrain

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2019
Cold seep habitats with authigenic carbonates and associated chemosynthetic communities in glacially influenced terrains constitute an important part of the benthic ecosystems, but they are difficult to detect in large-scale seabed surveys.

Curvy Surface Reconstruction

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 7, 3 February 2026.
This review introduces the concept of “general curvy surface reconstruction,” which incorporates both geometric and physical dimensions, representing an upgrade over conventional geometric reconstruction that focuses solely on spatial relationships. Particular emphasis is placed on the emerging opportunities enabled by advanced measurement techniques ...

Evaluating the Risk of Collision of Seals Swimming Within Metres of Operating Tidal Turbines

open access: yesAquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, Volume 36, Issue 2, February 2026.
ABSTRACT We used imaging sonar to continuously monitor wildlife at an operational tidal turbine in the Pentland Firth, Scotland, between May 2022 and June 2023. Of 704 detected seal tracks, 347 occurred during turbine operation and 122 of these were detected directly upstream of the rotating blades in the horizontal plane.

Combining multibeam and single beam echosounders for quantifying gas bubble release from the seafloor

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography: Methods, Volume 24, Issue 2, February 2026.
Abstract Marine gas bubble release is a worldwide phenomenon that impacts the local marine ecosystem and contributes to carbon fluxes with respect to global warming. It is still challenging to assess gas flow for large seep areas (tens of km2), but recent advances in calibrating and processing multibeam echosounder (MBES) data make this problem ...

A Frequency–Azimuth Spectrum Estimation Method for Uniform Linear Array Based on Deconvolution

open access: yesRemote Sensing
The frequency–azimuth (FRAZ) spectrum is a critical characteristic in passive target detection and tracking, as it encapsulates information regarding the signal’s frequency and azimuth.

A distributed autonomous passive sonar system

open access: yes
Monitoring marine areas has become a fundamental activity for addressing key challenges such as biodiversity research and conservation, civilian operations on infrastructures and Marine Protected Areas (MPA), and military surveillance, with a particular focus on Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) and the protection of critical infrastructures. A current open
