Pasteurella Multocida Infection in the Hand

We have discussed 13 patients with Pasteurella multocida infection of the hand, six of whom developed chronic hand impairment as a result of the infection. It is thus apparent that chronic morbidity following Pasteurella infection of the hand is nearly 50 percent.

Pasteurella multocida infections in West Suffolk

During the 3-year period 1980-1982, Pasteurella multocida was isolated from 19 patients, each with a history of animal contact. One patient, a slaughterman, whose exposure was occupational, developed meningitis. These case reports illustrate unusual features of human infections with this zoonotic pathogen.

Pasteurella multocida, a Gram-negative facultative anaerobic coccobacillus, is a common oral flora of dogs and cats. P. multocida often causes infection in humans after animal bites and scratches, and human pasteurellosis is generally a locoregional infection.
