The Genus Pasteuria

These budding bacteria are found in aquatic habitats. Metchnikoff described Pasteuria ramosa as a parasite of the freshwater fleas, Daphnia pulex and Daphnia major (Metchnikoff, 1888). The microbe was not isolated.

This chapter on Pasteuria spp. highlights Metchnikoff's thinking that Pasteuria spp. was able to undergo as many as five longitudinal divisions at the same time, giving it a characteristic fan shape. Two strains of ovoid budding bacteria have been isolated from peptone enrichment cultures from a creek and lake. The cells of both strains attach to organisms and inanimate substrata by holdfast structures located at the narrow poles of the cells and produce buds at or near the opposite, wider pole of the cell.
