ENDOSYMBIONT MICROBIOTA OF Meloidogyne javanica ADULT FEMALE INFECTED BY Pasteuria penetrans

open access: goldTropical and Subtropical Agroecosystems, 2022
Background: Pasteuria penetrans is a nonculturable bacterium that obligately parasitizes several species of phytopathogenic nematodes. Unknown endogenous female, plant or microbial reproductive factors are indispensable for multiplication and endospore ...

Phenotypic Adaptations in Pasteuria spp. Nematode Parasites.

open access: greenJournal of nematology, 1995
The endospore and central core diameters of 69 isolates of Pasteuria spp. showed a relationship with the body wall thickness of their corresponding host nematodes. A relationship was also observed when cuticle and hypodermis layer data were derived from transmission electron microscopy micrographs.

Imaging flow cytometry enables label-free cell sorting of morphological variants from populations of the unculturable bacterium Pasteuria ramosa

open access: goldmSphere
Bacterial populations often display remarkable morphological heterogeneity. Fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) is an important tool for understanding this diversity. FACs allows researchers to obtain pure samples of each morphological variant (or

Epidemiology of a Daphnia-multiparasite system and its implications for the red queen. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
The Red Queen hypothesis can explain the maintenance of host and parasite diversity. However, the Red Queen requires genetic specificity for infection risk (i.e., that infection depends on the exact combination of host and parasite genotypes) and ...

Emended description of Pasteuria nishizawae [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology, 2005
The description of the Gram-positive, obligately parasitic, mycelial and endospore-forming bacterium, Pasteuria nishizawae, is emended to include additional observations on the life cycle, host specificity and endospore morphology. The nucleotide sequence of the 16S rRNA gene is also provided.

Exploring the mechanisms of host-specificity of a hyperparasitic bacterium (Pasteuria spp.) with potential to control tropical root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.): insights from Caenorhabditis elegans

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, 2023
Plant-parasitic nematodes are important economic pests of a range of tropical crops. Strategies for managing these pests have relied on a range of approaches, including crop rotation, the utilization of genetic resistance, cultural techniques, and since ...

Genetic and Immunological Comparison of the Cladoceran Parasite Pasteuria ramosa with the Nematode Parasite Pasteuria penetrans [PDF]

open access: yesApplied and Environmental Microbiology, 2008
ABSTRACT Pasteuria penetrans , an obligate endospore-forming parasite of Meloidogyne spp. (root knot nematodes), has been identified as a promising agent for biocontrol of these destructive agricultural crop pests. Pasteuria ramosa , an obligate parasite of water fleas (

QTL study reveals candidate genes underlying host resistance in a Red Queen model system.

open access: yesPLoS Genetics, 2023
Specific interactions of host and parasite genotypes can lead to balancing selection, maintaining genetic diversity within populations. In order to understand the drivers of such specific coevolution, it is necessary to identify the molecular ...

The visual ecology of selective predation: Are unhealthy hosts less stealthy hosts?

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2021
Predators can strongly influence disease transmission and evolution, particularly when they prey selectively on infected hosts. Although selective predation has been observed in numerous systems, why predators select infected prey remains poorly ...

The genetic basis of resistance and matching-allele interactions of a host-parasite system: The Daphnia magna-Pasteuria ramosa model. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Genetics, 2017
Negative frequency-dependent selection (NFDS) is an evolutionary mechanism suggested to govern host-parasite coevolution and the maintenance of genetic diversity at host resistance loci, such as the vertebrate MHC and R-genes in plants.
