Catchment Influences on Carbon Stable Isotope Variation in Trout; Might It Be Methane?

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 5, May 2026.
Trout stable carbon isotope values vary significantly and appear to relate to catchment characteristics. Low carbon stable isotope values are linked to catchments with low drainage soil and high cover of pasture land use. This is likely to be linked to high levels of methane‐derived carbon entering the stream food web.

On the Efficiency and Durability of Purposefully Sinking Seaweed Biomass as a Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal Strategy

open access: yesEarth's Future, Volume 14, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract Large‐scale farming and purposeful sinking of seaweed has been suggested as a marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR) strategy. Farmed seaweed uptakes dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) from the mixed layer, resulting in a CO2 deficit that causes an influx of atmospheric CO2 into the surface ocean.

Extending plant water‐use strategies to flowers: Evidence from trait correlations across plant organs

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 40, Issue 5, Page 1491-1503, May 2026.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Despite the importance of flowers to plant fitness, it remains unclear whether flowers display ecophysiological strategies and how floral traits are associated with leaf economic traits.

A framework for capturing indirect impacts in site‐level screening for biodiversity risks

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 17, Issue 5, Page 1376-1386, May 2026.
Abstract Site‐based industrial operations such as mining, oil and gas extraction and renewable energy development are associated with many direct and indirect impacts on biodiversity. Consideration of the full range of these impacts when selecting a buffer distance to approximate the Area of Influence (AoI) of a project is critical for effective ...

Climate Change Projected to Double the Richness and Abundance of Soilborne Phytopathogenic Fungi in Southern Maritime Antarctica

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 32, Issue 5, May 2026.
We sequenced fungal DNA in barren soils sampled from 12 sites along a 1900‐km transect through sub‐ and Maritime Antarctica and Patagonia. Using LASSO regression, we found air temperature ‐ and notably mean annual air temperature (BIO1) ‐ to be a highly significant predictor for the richness and relative abundance of soilborne plant pathogens.
