Significant impact of lithogenic dissolution from subantarctic volcanic islands on the regional marine silicon cycle

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, Volume 70, Issue 12, Page 3711-3724, December 2025.
Abstract Silicic acid controls the production of diatoms, a predominant phytoplankton in the Southern Ocean. Diatoms are major contributors to the biological carbon pump, which is particularly active in the Southern Ocean as well as in areas naturally enriched in iron, such as around the Kerguelen Plateau.

Addressing the Effects of Station Network Geographical Inhomogeneity on Spatially Aggregated Verification Scores

open access: yesMeteorological Applications, Volume 32, Issue 6, November/December 2025.
In this study, we explore solutions for reducing the effects of station network geographical inhomogeneities on spatially aggregated verification scores, for operational verification practices. A weighting procedure based on Gaussian kernels, where the weights are inversely proportional to the network density around each station, is proposed.

Necessary Core‐Mantle Boundary Heat Flux Patterns for Recovering the Latitude of the South Atlantic Anomaly

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 130, Issue 11, November 2025.
Abstract The present‐day geomagnetic field at Earth's surface is characterized by an anomalously weak region known as the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA). Numerical dynamo simulations with an imposed outer boundary heat flux pattern inferred from lowermost mantle seismic anomalies reproduce well the longitude of the SAA, but the latitudes of the modeled ...

Foxes as pets: Case study of the Fuegian Dog and its relationship to extinct Indigenous cultures

open access: yesJournal of Zoology, Volume 327, Issue 1, Page 5-18, September 2025.
This is a rare glimpse into the historical past of the zoologically mysterious Fuegian Dog that lived with early Holocene Indigenous groups on the island of Tierra del Fuego. Records of the animal's appearance and behavior kept by early explorers, artists and scientists who travelled to the tip of South America, plus the genetics and archaeological ...

Two Decades of Increase in Southern Ocean Net Community Production Revealed by BGC‐Argo Floats

open access: yesGlobal Biogeochemical Cycles, Volume 39, Issue 8, August 2025.
Abstract Nitrate is an essential nutrient for phytoplankton growth and is a primary component of ocean carbon cycling. In this study, we developed a neural network constrained by the high spatial and temporal coverage of BGC‐Argo floats to predict nitrate in a consistent way throughout space and time in the Southern Ocean, a key area for ocean carbon ...

The Uttermost part of the Earth: Patagonia in the Imagination of Contemporary Travel Writers

open access: yes, 2023
openQuesto lavoro si propone di individuare le varie sfaccettature del capitale simbolico della Patagonia e illustra come l’immaginario, di questa terra ai confini del mondo, si sviluppa nei secoli e in che forme si impone nella narrativa di viaggio del ...

Biological, Biogeochemical, Bio‐Optical, and Physical Variability of the Southern Ocean Along 150°W and Its Relevance to the Great Calcite Belt

open access: yesGlobal Biogeochemical Cycles, Volume 39, Issue 8, August 2025.
Abstract We report hydrographic and biogeochemical measurements from a meridional transect performed along 150°W, 30°S to 60°S in the Southern Ocean, plus Polar waters to the east. Both of these areas are sites of annual high‐reflectance features in ocean color remote sensing, which were heretofore never confirmed with in situ measurements.

Approaching the Miocene Climatic Optimum in Patagonia (Southern Argentina): Temperature Seasonality and a Potential Role for the Opening Drake Passage

open access: yesPaleoceanography and Paleoclimatology, Volume 40, Issue 6, June 2025.
Abstract The Miocene Epoch (23.03–5.33 Ma) is receiving increased attention because estimated pCO2 and its associated warmth is comparable to projections over the next century. Well‐constrained sea‐surface temperatures in the tropics and northern latitudes express amplified warming during the Miocene Climatic Optimum (MCO; 16.9–14.7 Ma), yet data from ...
