Economically optimal management strategies for the South Georgia Patagonian toothfish fishery
2011The fishery for Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) around the island of South Georgia in the Southern Ocean is a profitable operation targeting a high-value, slow-growing species. We substituted the complex Bayesian age-structured model currently used for assessments with a Schaefer production model, which performs equally well as an ...

Marine Ecology Progress Series
Many long-lived, deep-sea species of the higher latitudes possess protracted egg and larval phases leading to dispersal across large geographical areas. The timing of ontogenetic life-history shifts is vital for understanding dispersal potential, a key driver of spatial patterns and stock structure of Patagonian toothfish Dissostichus eleginoides on ...

Patagonian toohfish (Dissostichus eleginoides), is a sub Antartic notothenioid fish key in the marine ecosystem that sustains fishery of higher commercial value in the world. However, there are a scarce knowledge or information about its population genetic background, product of the almost null information of molecular markers available for this ...

Geopolitics, Patagonian Toothfish and living resource regulation in the Southern Ocean
Third World Quarterly, 2000This paper is concerned with the ongoing controversies regarding the over-harvesting of Patagonian Toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) in the Southern Ocean. After some thoughts on the varied geographies of this region, attention is then paid to the Convention for Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources.

Population structure of the Patagonian toothfish around Heard, McDonald and Macquarie Islands
Antarctic Science, 2002Two mitochondrial DNA regions and seven microsatellite loci were examined in Patagonian toothfish from three locations in the Southern Ocean (Macquarie Island, five collections; Heard and McDonald Islands, four collections; Shag Rocks/South Georgia area, one collection).

Preliminary Report on the Total Mercury Content of Patagonian Toothfish (Dissostichos eleginoides)
Journal of Food Composition and Analysis, 2001Abstract Primary data on mercury content in Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichos eleginoides) revealed that low to relatively high contents of this metal are present in the flesh. Values ranging between 0.12 and 0.73 mg kg−1were found in 18 specimens analysed. These figures are in accordance to the feeding habits and long life of this fish.

The parasite fauna of the Patagonian toothfish Dissostichus eleginoides off the Falkland Islands
Journal of Helminthology, 2012AbstractThe parasite fauna of juvenile Dissostichus eleginoides, while they inhabit the Falkland's shelf, was examined, giving new detailed information on spatial, ontogenic and seasonal variations. A total of 24,943 parasites from 15 different taxa were found in the stomach of 502 individual fish.

An experimental fishery for Patagonian toothfish Dissostichus eleginoides was opened in Falkland Island waters briefly in 1992 and then from April 1994. One to two longlines per vessel were usually deployed at night, mostly fishing for 12–30 h at depths between 600 and 2000 m.

Soviet Union fishing fleets found Patagonian toothfish in 1985 off the Kerguelen Islands in the Southern Ocean. In a few short years, toothfish became heavily fished and the viability of the fishery was put in question. This pressure largely arose from illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing that undermined fisheries management by coastal ...
