We review genetic diseases with identified molecular bases that include abnormal, reduced (hypoplasia), or absent (aplasia) patellae as a significant aspect of the phenotype. The known causal genes can be broadly organized according to three major developmental and cellular processes, although some genes may act in more than one of these: limb ...

Tuberculosis causing an osteolytic lesion in the patella is very rare, having been reported on only four previous occasions. We present such a case and discuss the radiological features which help in differentiating tuberculosis from other similar lesions.

Pseudochondromalacia Patellae [PDF]
A condition causing knee pain with retropatellar crepitus similar to chondromalacia patellae is described. The symptoms seem to be due not to chondromalacia of the patella, but to a local synovial thickening proximal to the articular surface of the medial femoral condyle.

Biomechanics of the knee extensor mechanism and its relationship to patella tendinopathy: A review
The term jumpers knee for patella tendinitis, as coined by Dr. Martin Blazina, is now commonly referred to as tendinopathy. He believed it was associated with patella alta.

Current concepts review: Fractures of the patella
Fractures of the patella account for about 1% of all skeletal injuries and can lead to profound impairment due to its crucial function in the extensor mechanism of the knee.

CHONDROMALACIA OF THE PATELLA [PDF]
1. Chondromalacia, sometimes a precursor of osteoarthritis, is present in the articular cartilage of the patella of most people by the age of thirty; it causes symptoms in only a few, and it gives rise to osteoarthritis in fewer still. It may progress slowly or quickly but there is no clinical method of assessing the prognosis at an early stage.

Patella instability in children and adolescents
Patellar instabilities are the most common knee pathologies during growth. Congenital dislocations are rare. Extensive, early soft tissue releases relocate the extensor mechanism and may enable normal development of the femoro-patellar anatomy ...

Lytic patellar lesions may occur in a variety of conditions, from commonly seen developmental, degenerative, traumatic, metabolic, infectious, iatrogenic to uncommon benign and malignant neoplasms. Patellar metastasis is rare. Due to the low incidence and the non-specific symptoms of metastatic anterior knee pain, delayed diagnosis is common and the ...

The patella is an uncommon location for cancerous occurrence and development. The majority of tumors of the patella are benign, with a significant incidence of giant cell tumors and chondroblastoma. With the development of modern diagnostic technologies,
