Medial gastrocnemius flap for reconstruction of the extensor mechanism of the knee following high-energy trauma. A minimum 5 year follow-up [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The purpose of this study was to assess the medium-term results of reconstruction of the extensor mechanism using the medial gastrocnemius while also providing soft tissue coverage. This retrospective review consisted of a consecutive series of four ...

A limpet's eye view of post‐glacial isostasy: fixed biological indicators provide new sea‐level index points for the Mid‐Holocene relative highstand in eastern Northern Ireland

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
Bioerosional scars made by limpets (Patella) on a cliff in Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland, indicate a Mid‐Holocene RSL of +7.8±0.55 m relative to local mid‐tide level today. This is higher than previous empirical data for the region and extrapolated levels from raised shorelines in Scotland but consistent with some recent GIA models.

Prospective Analysis of Functional Outcome of Patella Fracture Management by a Novel Method (FiberWire Fixation): A 2-year Follow-up Study [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Orthopedics and Joint Surgery
Introduction: The most commonly used procedure for patella fracture fixation is osteosynthesis with Kirschner wires (K-wires) and tension band wiring. A high number of implant-related complications are associated with K-wires and tension band wiring.

Metastatic Rectal Adenocarcinoma of the Hip and Knee Joints: A Case Series [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Two cases are presented of patients with a history of metastatic rectal adenocarcinoma presenting with a painful joint effusion. Both cases are potential examples of metastasis to periarticular bone with local infiltration to the synovium, which is one ...

Concurrent ANNPE and vertebral T‐cell lymphoma in a dog: A case report

open access: yesJournal of Small Animal Practice, EarlyView.
Acute non‐compressive nucleus pulposus extrusion (ANNPE) is a recognised cause of peracute spinal cord injury in dogs, involving sudden extrusion of non‐degenerated nucleus pulposus with minimal compression. While often linked to vigorous activity, its triggers remain unclear.

Fixation of patella fracture with non-metallic implant

open access: yesJournal of Orthopaedics, Trauma and Rehabilitation
Introduction Patella fracture fixations were traditionally done using metal tension band wiring techniques. However, complications associated with metallic implants causing soft tissue irritation are not infrequent.

Minimally invasive osteosynthesis using a dynamic compression angle‐stable interlocking nail in feline transverse femoral fractures: an ex vivo study

open access: yesJournal of Small Animal Practice, EarlyView.
Objective To evaluate the effectiveness of interfragmentary compression in feline femoral transverse fractures treated with a dynamic compression angle‐stable interlocking nail implanted via minimally invasive nail osteosynthesis. Methods Thirty femurs from 15 feline cadavers were allocated into three groups according to fracture location (n = 10 per ...

A Rare Case of an Irreducible Patella Dislocation

open access: yesCase Reports in Medicine, 2016
Reports of irreducible patellar dislocations are exceedingly sparse throughout the literature. Obvious radiographic or physical exam findings including fracture or inversion of the patella are often present to explain the block to reduction.
