Patellar fracture following surgery for patellar instability
Knee, 2004We present a case of patellar fracture in a teenager that followed a soft tissue realignment surgery for patellar instability. We propose that this fracture was due to disruption of the blood supply to the patella as a result of the procedure. To our knowledge this complication, which has been documented following Total Knee Arthroplasty, has not been ...

Three cases of patellar fatigue fracture are reviewed. Two fractures presented with acute displacement and were initially thought to represent pathological fractures. Histological appearances in one case, and the clinical course in another, subsequently indicated that these were fatigue fractures.

Periprosthetic Patellar Fractures
Journal of Knee Surgery, 2013Periprosthetic patellar fractures represent a spectrum of injuries to a patient with a total knee arthroplasty. They range in severity from an inconsequential injury, which does not compromise function, to a severely debilitating injury that may require advanced reconstructive measures.

Patellar fracture is a common injury caused by excessive tension through the extensor mechanism or a direct blow. The intact patella increases the leverage and efficiency of the extensor mechanism and articulates with the femoral trochlea. Patellar fractures can lead to stiffness, extension weakness, and patellofemoral arthritis. Nonsurgical management

Patellar Sleeve Fracture With Ossification of the Patellar Tendon
Orthopedics, 2017Patellar sleeve fractures make up greater than 50% of all patellar fractures. They are essentially only seen in the pediatric population because of the thick periosteum and the distal patellar pole apophysis in this group. These fractures can lead to complications if not treated appropriately and in a timely fashion.

Fracture of a patellar enthesophyte
BMJ Case ReportsBone spurs are abnormal projections of bone that include both osteophytes and enthesophytes. They differ anatomically as osteophytes form around the joint line, while enthesophytes form at the insertion sites of tendons or ligaments known as entheses. The authors present a case of fracture through a large enthesophyte at the inferior patellar pole that

Patellar Tendon Rupture Following a Patellar Fracture
Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy, 2012The patient was a 57-year-old woman who was referred to a physical therapist in an outpatient setting 8 weeks following an open reduction internal fixation procedure for a left patellar fracture following a fall where the patient landed directly on her left knee in a flexed position.

Patellar fractures are a relatively rare entity with an prevalence of 1%. Preoperative computed tomography has gained a significant role as a diagnostic tool for patellar fractures in recent years. It enables an exact assessment of the fracture and helps in the decision making for the correct treatment procedure.
