Extensor apparatus injuries have an incidence of 0.5–6 %. Patellar tendon is part of this structure, and its rupture is the third in frequency after patella and quadriceps tendon ones. However, despite the rarity of this lesion, it is a dramatic injury with important consequences on knee function.

Patellar Sleeve Fracture With Ossification of the Patellar Tendon
Orthopedics, 2017Patellar sleeve fractures make up greater than 50% of all patellar fractures. They are essentially only seen in the pediatric population because of the thick periosteum and the distal patellar pole apophysis in this group. These fractures can lead to complications if not treated appropriately and in a timely fashion.

Rupture of the patellar tendon is a relatively infrequent, yet disabling, injury, which is most commonly seen in patients less than 40 years of age. It tends to occur during athletic activities when a violent contraction of the quadriceps muscle group is resisted by the flexed knee.

Isolated rupture of the patellar tendon is a rare injury. Often occurring during a fall in 20- and 30-year olds, patients may have a preexisting medical condition (eg, history of steroid use) or a history of repetitive microtrauma to the knee. A high-riding patella on physical examination and radiographs is pathognomonic.Immediate orthopaedic referral ...

Quadriceps and Patellar Tendon Ruptures
Journal of Knee Surgery, 2013The diagnosis of quadriceps and patellar tendon ruptures requires a high index of suspicion and thorough history-taking to assess for medical comorbidities that may predispose patients to tendon degeneration. Radiographic assessment with plain films supplemented by ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging when the work-up is equivocal further aids ...

Neglected rupture of the patellar tendon
Archives of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery, 1999Neglected rupture of the patellar tendon is a rare but well recognised complication of knee trauma. We present the case of a 43-year-old man who sustained a complete rupture of the patellar tendon of his left knee following a fall. Clinical diagnosis was delayed by 2 months and was confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging.

Gene transfer to the patellar tendon
Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy, 1997AbstractGrowth factors have the potential to enhance native repair responses in ligamentous lesions. However, methods for applying these cytokines to sites of injury for extended periods are lacking. We suggest that local transfer of genes which encode the relevant healing factors merits investigation as a potential solution to this problem.

Patellar Tendon Rupture Following a Patellar Fracture
Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy, 2012The patient was a 57-year-old woman who was referred to a physical therapist in an outpatient setting 8 weeks following an open reduction internal fixation procedure for a left patellar fracture following a fall where the patient landed directly on her left knee in a flexed position.
