Robert Gross stated that his first ligation of a patent ductus arteriosus in 1938 “formed the opening wedge in the surgical attack on congenital cardiovascular anomalies.”9 Ligation or division of the ductus has become a simple procedure associated with almost no morbidity or mortality.

THE PROFESSIONAL SETTING August 1938! Few physicians of today can be fully aware of the forces at play on a surgeon contemplating a new procedure in that year. Even those of us still alive who were active then find it difficult to recreate the setting. I will try to recall some conditions and events.

The incidence of PDA is inversely related to gestational age in premature infants. Clinical presentation of PDA in premature infants is different than in older children. They present with increased work of breathing or an increasing need for mechanical ventilatory support.

Persistent Patent Ductus Arteriosus
International Journal of Technology Assessment in Health Care, 1991Two observations about the ductus arteriosus are established: most normally developed infants will have a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) at the time of delivery, and most fullterm infants will have anatomic obliteration of the ductus lumen by 3–6 months of age.

Patent Ductus Arteriosus in Malaysia
Australian and New Zealand Journal of Medicine, 1979Summary: Findings are reviewed of isolated Patent Ductus Arteriosus after infancy as seen in 181 patients studied at the University Hospital, Kuala Lumpur, during the period 1967 to 1975. The ages of patients ranged from nine months to 54 years. Eighty‐two patients underwent cardiac catheterization.

Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is the most common cardiac abnormality of the preterm infant. Its incidence is inversely related to gestational age, such that it affects almost 60% of infants less than 28 weeks’ gestation. Data published in 2007 demonstrated that spontaneous closure of the ductus occurs in 30% of infants with birthweights below 1500 g ...

Patent ductus arteriosus may occur as an isolated lesion or in association with congenital cardiac malformations. Echocardiography in conjunction with colour Doppler displays the morphology of the ductus and its anatomic variations. Analysis of ductal flow by pulsed wave Doppler provides valuable haemodynamic information in neonates allowing to ...

Pharmacotherapy for patent ductus arteriosus closure
Congenital Heart Disease, 2018Even though up to 60% of premature infants less than 28 weeks gestation develop persistent patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), there remains controversy regarding if, when, and how to close the PDA.

The ductus arteriosus is a normal fetal structure arising from the left sixth aortic arch. It is a vascular connection between the main pulmonary artery and the upper descending thoracic aorta that penetrates the pericardium and just distal and opposite to the origin and insertion of the left subclavian artery. The anatomy of the thorax is essential to
