The safety of patient‐controlled sedation
Anaesthesia, 1997We have investigated the safety of a previously described method of patient‐controlled sedation in 100 healthy patients presenting for elective surgery. The device used 0.33‐ml boluses of propofol (10 mg.ml −1 ) infused over 6 s with no lockout.

Patient controlled analgesia in adolescents
Pain, 1987Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) is a method of administering narcotics in which the patient activates a machine to administer a small bolus of narcotic. In the first year of PCA use in our hospital, 26 patients used PCA. We suggest a dose volume of 0.015 mg/kg/dose and a 4-hour limit of 0.25 mg/kg/4 hr, with a lock-out of 10 minutes.

Patient-Controlled Epidural Analgesia for Labor
Anesthesia & Analgesia, 2009Patient-controlled epidural analgesia (PCEA) for labor was introduced into clinical practice 20 yr ago. Extending patient-controlled analgesia to patient-controlled neuroleptanalgesia.
South African journal of surgery. Suid-Afrikaanse tydskrif vir chirurgie, 1993A trial was conducted (among 22 patients) to assess a new use of patient-controlled devices. Using a patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) pump under the anaesthetist's guidance, the patients self-administered a neurolept mixture consisting of droperidol and alfentanil. The patients were then able to undergo minor surgery (dilatation and curettage).
