Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Developing a real-time electronic symptom monitoring system for patients after discharge following cancer-related surgery

open access: yesBMC Cancer, 2019
Background Patients undergoing major cancer surgery frequently require post-acute care for complications and adverse effects. Enhanced recovery after surgery programmes mean that patients are increasingly discharged home earlier.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

State of the psychometric methods: patient-reported outcome measure development and refinement using item response theory.

open access: yes, 2019
BACKGROUND:This paper is part of a series comparing different psychometric approaches to evaluate patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures using the same items and dataset.

Is patient-centredness in European hospitals related to existing quality improvement strategies? Analysis of a cross-sectional survey (MARQuIS study). [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
BACKGROUND: There is growing recognition of patients' contributions to setting objectives for their own care, improving health outcomes and evaluating care.

Examining the face validity of the EQ-HWB-9 in dementia: caregiver interpretation across “Today” and “7-Day” recall periods

open access: yesHealth and Quality of Life Outcomes
Background This study aimed to assess the face validity of the EQ Health and Wellbeing 9 (EQ-HWB-9) for use as a proxy by informal caregivers of community-dwelling people living with dementia (PlwD).

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

The development and validation of a patient-reported outcome measure of health-related quality of life for patients with pressure ulcers: PUQOL Project [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
This thesis aimed to establish the impact of pressure ulcers (PUs) on health-related quality of life (HRQL) and determine the need for a PU-specific patient-reported outcome (PRO) instrument.

Strategies to use tablet computers for collection of electronic patient-reported outcomes

open access: yes, 2015
Background Mobile devices are increasingly being used for data collection in research. However, many researchers do not have experience in collecting data electronically.
