Fungi are ubiquitous in the environment and are part of human flora. Many fungi of the genus Candida are opportunistic pathogens and cause infections in immunocompromised individuals or with altered immune system. The severity of infection is determined by the virulence of the agent and its ability to evade host immune defenses.

Candida albicans is the most important etiological agent implicated in oral candidiosis. This species is a dimorphic fungi that it can be seen like yeasts (saprofitic form) or hypha (parasitic form). Several metabolic products and some cell wall components of C. albicans have been related with its pathogenicity.
