A pattern effect compensator

open access: yes, 2001
Degradation of high power signals is observed at bitrates comparable to the gain recovery time in Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers (SOA). The device studied here reduces this pattern effect of SOAs. It is a non-linear Mach-Zehnder interferometer with a SOA in each branch.

The effectiveness of groups recognizing patterns

International Journal of Human-Computer Studies, 2003
An experiment was conducted in which groups made resource allocation decisions while physically dispersed and supported with a shared virtual work surface (What You See Is What I See--WYSIWIS). The task required groups to recognize patterns of information and collaborate to allocate their resources appropriately. The experimental treatment involved the

Fatigue Effects on Patterns of Movement

Ergonomics, 1971
The standing broad jump and four other gross body movements were analysed by colour-coded multiple-image photography before and after three kinds of fatigue-inducing exercise. For each movement marked individual differences in style of performance were found which tended to persist despite the effects of fatigue.

Laterality Effects for Tactile Patterns

International Journal of Neuroscience, 1994
A series of studies was carried out to investigate laterality effects in the discrimination of tactile patterns presented to the fingertips of right-handed subjects. When both hands were stimulated simultaneously, a small right-hand advantage (RHA) was observed for a sequential task and a small left-hand advantage (LHA) was found for a spatial task ...

Bad Effects of Patterning

Pediatrics, 1983
To the Editor.— I would like to commend the American Academy of Pediatrics for its updated and strong statement against the "patterning" treatment of neurologically handicapped children.1 Certainly one of the problems with the promoters of this type of treatment has been their insistence that the therapy be carried out 365

Effects of disorder in pattern formation

Physical Review E, 1993
The interplay between localization and nonlinearity is investigated for a modified Swift-Hohenberg equation. We introduced a spatially stochastic contribution ηξ(x) in the control parameter that mimics, for instance, the essential effects of irregularities at the top and bottom plate in Rayleigh-Benard convection experiments.

The pattern ERG in glaucoma: effect of pattern reversal time

International Ophthalmology, 1992
Pattern reversals with a ramp-like temporal course evoke transient pattern electroretinograms (PERG) that are delayed and attenuated in comparison with responses evoked by a step-like course (abrupt pattern reversals). This delay depends on the reversal time and probably represents a measure for temporal characteristics of the activated retinal ...

Patterns for Effectively Documenting Frameworks

2011
Good design and implementation are necessary but not sufficient prerequisites for successfully reusing object-oriented frameworks. Although not always recognized, good documentation is crucial for effective framework reuse, and often hard, costly, and tiresome, coming with many issues, especially when we are not aware of the key problems and respective

Effects of Hypoxia on the Circadian Patterns in Men

High Altitude Medicine & Biology, 2003
We tested the hypothesis that acute hypoxia may alter the circadian pattern of body temperature in adult humans. Six healthy subjects were studied in normoxia, hypoxia (approximately 13% inspired O(2)), and again normoxia, each session lasting >24 h and spaced a few days apart, with a constant routine protocol of sustained wakefulness and minimal ...
