Positional Information and Pattern Formation
Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. B, Biological Sciences, 1981Spatial patterns of cellular differentiation may arise from cells first being assigned a position, as in a coordinate system, and then interpreting the positional value that they have acquired. This interpretation will depend on their genetic constitution and developmental history. Different patterns may thus arise from similar positional fields.
